JONI MITCHELL TRIBUTE CONCERT IN OZ!

Earlier this year, I had written a Blog about Joni Mitchell's most unexpected CD release, "Shine". I ordered a copy after auditioning some cuts through a pair of headphones and I was still amazed at this iconic artist's ability to inspire so many others. When Jewel Kilcher first hit the music scene around 1994, I remember that most of my friends who had purchased Jewel's debut CD also had a copy of Joni Mitchell's groundbreaking "Blue" laying around their house when I visited.
-
Now comes news of a wonderful tribute that has been assembled by seven female singers. The seven are: Wendy Matthews, Katie Noonan, Rachel Gaudry, Louise Perryman, Kristin Berardi, Tania Bowra and Virna Sanzone. Backed by a 12-piece band, they will perform Joni - A Tribute to the Legendary Joni Mitchell at the Sydney Opera House on Friday, October 30th. Another appearance is booked for Wednesday, November 4th at Brisbane OPAL Concert Hall. The concert will move chronologically through Mitchell's catalogue from the first acoustic albums through the jazz-infused phase, the '80s synthesizer-rock stage up to her orchestral reworking of her songs this decade. This is a short clip and not one I've seen before today, so I wanted to share it. It's so nice to see positive news taking shape along these lines anywhere, given the state of the worldwide economy. This is a well needed diversion with a purpose. Have a good week!

Every time I hear the name "Joni Mitchell" I remember a line in the movie "You've Got Mail"... "I could never be with someone who likes Joni Mitchell. "It's clouds illusions I recall/I really don't know clouds at all." What does that mean? Is she a pilot? Is she taking flying lessons? It's probably a metaphor for something, but I don't know what." That being said, I love her music and wish I was able to see this (what seems to be) amazing tribute! Enjoy!

i'd like a diversion with purpose. but don't take away my purposeless ones. i want them all.
listening to a joni mitchell tribute backed by a full orchestra sounds exciting! not that her music needs help, but an orchestra makes everything sound good.

Nikki: "Both Sides Now" is a reflective piece written by Joni. She endured quite a lot at an early age and became wiser for it. I find her an interesting person with a career that is incredible from music to paintings and now a ballet built around her music. I'm glad that she was unexpectedly inspired to come back to write. She is no longer touring, which I regret.

Seraphine: She last toured Australia 9 years ago and it was, I believe, a 12 city tour. I am always hopeful she will change her mind and tour again, but this is probably what millions of others are thinking too! The girls behind this project are amazing! :)

Have a good week? I'm working on it, but the economy just isn't improving as quickly as I want it too.

yeah. i love that they started singing her songs in a basement.
i never thought of joni as a basement singer. i imagine her under a tree or something.

Martini: I know what you mean. But stay with it. We have to be tougher than the economy as we will be standing long after it dissipates.

Seraphine: She actually started singing in small clubs, and she is a very active environmentalist too--so the tree was not that far off! ;D)

my very favorite song from Joni Mitchell is "Troubled child"...it is "my song" when I first heard it years ago I thought she was singing about me...and thought she had gotten into my head somehow...:o)...really I did! It was that profound. I posted the song Troubled child about 6 months back from youtube on my blog.

Jewell is one of my great discoveries a few years before she became popular. I saw her on a PBs with Melissa Etheridge and Sophie B. Hawkins..and Melissa introduced Jewel singing "Foolish Games"and I was hooked for life. Had to spend months looking for her "at the time not yet popular album" "Pieces of you" and ended up ordering it from a very funky unusual record and cd store..they helped me find it and when I got Pieces of you I was once again spellbound. I know have two of Jewels books, one being "A night without Armor" and "Riding down the Dawn" both incredibly written books. She's such a muse...poet..and such a very true real person. Pieces of you my fav cd and then "Spirit" which is so beautiful.

Hope I didn't ramble on too much about Jewel...you shouldn't have mentioned her in here!..he he.

Do you like Jewel a lot? Just curious.

Maybe one day you should interview me Michael, because as so many tell me that know me and "knew" me that i have an incredible story to tell..could make a few movies and books out of my very interesting but difficult life. I've been around and experience a lot I tell ya...the good and the bad. I've faced fears and adversities like a whole lifetime it seems and I"m still around...miracle.

Well, off I go onto make some more trouble on someone else's blog.

Smiles..

Rhiannon: Life can be interesting. Jewel lived 90 miles Southwest of me in Texas. LeAnn Rimes lived 4 blocks away from me and I worked with Bill Mack, who wrote her hit song "Blue". Then I asked out a Dixie Chick (I've blogged about that already) before anyone knew who they were. Strange world!:)
