I was sad to read of WC's passing. And I thought it strangely appropriate that he died on the 40th anniversary of the first moon landing, which he reported live. He leaves a rich legacy of honorable living and award winning reporting. He will be greatly missed.
Diane: His death saddens me because unlike Walter's objective reporting, we have immersed ourselves in cheap sensationalism as "news" of the day, and short cuts when it comes to the proper way to build careers in broadcast journalism. Walter Cronkite was a uiique man who came along at the right time and remained relevant. He had Integrity and Warmth and I think, Diane, those are the two qualities I will miss the most as a reporter and a news anchor myself who came through the "school of hard knocks" and always admired him as the best.
My condolences go out to his family along with my most sincere thoughts and prayers. It's hard for a family to lose anyone, regardless of their age. God Bless him.
PM: It's about Integrity and remaining non-partisan and simply reporting the facts. Throughout his years at CBS, we never really knew his political opinions. That era is gone now and we have polarized cable news shows that are simply a shame. I did not agree with his decision to step down when he did. He was beloved by millions and we will remember him always! Such a big part of our lives!
Janet: lol! I must say. I tried very, very hard as a reporter to be only a good, solid reporter who backed up what he said with attributions. My co-anchor Curt Lewis, was also non-partisan and we would finish a newscast, then stay on the producers line (off the air) to check and re-check sources and share commentary. This was the right way to report news in my view. It was how Cronkite showed us.
What a year eh? 2009 has got to be going down as the biggest year for celeb/famous deaths. It's very sad. No surprise that you were so quick to post about his passing.
the thing i will remember from him is that incredible voice. it contained so much honesty. it can't be easy as a newscaster to deliver important news, especially after a national tragedy, but he had the gift of delivering such news with compassion and confidence.
Seraphine: That really took discipline on his part. He was a seasoned reporter who was so familiar with all aspects of broadcasting from the bottom up, which is not always the case today. Many of the regional power brokers in major markets are unfortunately former Sales Managers whose "whip the horse when he's running out flat" tough guy tactics to get the ratings makes for a very rough and tumble industry. Again, some but certainly not all.
Seraphine: lol! I quite agree. He was objective and a very fine writer, producer and reporter. He understood all facets of broadcast journalism. Many people today understand only the technological aspect. But Walter Cronkite understood what constituted a good newscast from the bootom-up. He was an extraordinary man who lived long, lived well and will be missed in this era of tabloid journalism.
Basically, I'm a Public Relations Consultant with a background in Broadcast News. I've worked as a Reporter and Anchor with PBS, ABC, CBS & NBC affiliates and in Cable Television. I'm active in Radio & Television Commercials, Guest Speaking engagements and I enjoy writing, music and sports.

Good Morning, Glenn! My very best to you on this Sunday!! :)
Michael, would that all journalists followed his example and integrity.
I knew, if nothing else, YOU would have a Cronkite tribute post. Yes, you are just THAT reliable!:)

Martini: Yes, a difficult year for losing people who lived their life well like Farrah Fawcett and Walter Cronkite. They are missed!

WC wasn't just a talking head.
and i hate those "news" stations that report only car wrecks, rapes and shootings.

A wonderful person, even though we only saw clips of him over here.
Captain: He was such a HUGE part of our culture. I appreciate your note!
