THE ULTIMATE SURVIVORS SONG!

The other day, I helped a 93 year old woman who was legally blind walk safely across a parking lot. From the expression on the face of the 30-something girl driving a white SUV (while talking on her cell phone), it was likely she would have driven straight through the cross walk and possibly struck this woman. As it turns out, the elderly woman was heading to a nearby Starbucks Cafe for a cup of coffee before she had someone call her a taxi cab. As we walked, I asked her what was new in her life? She replied that she had arranged to go on yet another cruise. "I've decided that although I wear hearing aids, it would be far worse not to hear than not to see". I said: "Well how do you get-by once you're on the ship?" She replied: "Oh, I have more fun! I just go on these trips to dance with the boys on deck, ya know. I can't see, but I remember all the dance steps". Today's BLOG Post is for her...

Great spirit.

D-Man: I agree! Remember my retelling of my Aunt attending a Beatles cover band concert at 89? She couldn't walk back to her car, so a motorcycle policeman offered her a ride on his Harley Davidson and she did it! HA! :D)

that's a great story.
there's a tom petty song lyric that goes 'if you never slow down, you never grow old' and it certainly applies to your friend.

Seraphine: Could that be "Last Dance with Mary Jane"? You Rock my friend! I was in a mall last night and saw a display window with black converse gym shoes and thought of your Blog site! :D)

Now there's a feisty lady for ya!
Someone needs to sit down with a tape recorder and let her tell stories. They'd most likely be very interesting.

now see... i can't seem to get anyone to believe me when i say that. i'd much rather lose my sight over my hearing.

noises, music, the sound of someone close to me speaking, those things are so very precious to me. sight is important, don't get me wrong, but looking at things can be done in many ways... i think i'd die if i lost my hearing.

you were blessed with a chance to meet a wonderfully wise woman. ^_^

sorry i've been away... good to read your blogs again.

Wyn: Very Nice to hear from you! I am very fortunate in that I seem to meet fascinating people a lot. The blessing is truly all mine. The 93-year-old lady has cataracts and could have had them safely removed but waited too long. Now, the surgical risk of her being totally blind is too high. So, this led her to decide to just let her eyes stay as they are. Thanks for your sweet comments about my writing. It is my outlet. See you at your place! :D)

P M: I once encountered a blind woman who was among the last people alive who knew Sigmund Freud personally! But I had a dear friend of mine who was gifted as a Freudian-trained therapist meet with her and he taped their sessions. Bob was one of the paid staff who trained me as a Suicide and Crisis Intervention Phone Counselor for 2 years when I undertook my Fieldwork Training in college as a Psych major. I DID interview my 89 year old Aunt who is the last living member of my family who knows all of the history about us. I had CD's of that visit made for my siblings. :)

That is simply awesome. My wife's grandmother is 95, still lives on her own, and has been volunteering at her local nursing home, near Ottawa, for over 20 years. She's got hearing aids, and two new hips, but other than that nothing is stopping her.
