Saturday, May 31, 2008A NEW JERSEY SATURDAY WITH BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!
"The Boss"___ For the first time in almost 30 years, there was a "happening" for Bruce Springsteen fans at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey. A benefit to raise $3 million to renovate the theatre, (which was built in 1926) cost most fans upwards of $1,000 per ticket. But according to Springsteen's wife and band mate Patti Scialfa, Bruce and The E. Street Band played cut-for-cut the albums "Darkness on The Edge of Town" (I personally followed that tour like a high octane groupie through two cities and had a blast!) and "Born To Run". Drummer Max Weinberg and the horn section from Conan O'brien's late night television show blasted through songs I personally love: "Candy's Room", "Badlands", "Backstreets" and "Somewhere in the Night". Patti Scialfa:"We play most of these songs on a pretty regular basis in our set. But when you hear them in order, it brings you back to the first time you heard them as a listener. Everything felt new again". ___ ENJOY YOUR SATURDAY! Friday, May 30, 2008"FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT" PRESENTS" THE SOUND OF MUSIC!
There have been two occasions since I began this feature, "Friday Movie Suggestion Night" where real-life circumstances led me to subordinate "staying on schedule" to doing what was right and posting something more urgent as I've done (FMSN ordinarily appears on Thursdays). I have no idea as to whatever "following" we have in this little corner of the blog world, just as I never did when I hosted a weekend radio Music Magazine long ago. But then as now, I have attempted to combine a balance with selections that alternately fit a series of circumstances, and of course I enjoy the unpredictable. So, one never really knows what to expect here!_____ This week began slowly with Memorial Day, and I suspect a bit of a shock mixed with melancholia at my decision to republish my dear friend and Guest Denny Shane on another blog feature of mine, "THE INTERVIEW". Ultimately, the arrival of my new friends The Gillespie Family from Kentucky to Arizona where their son Gunner (see my 05/12/08 Blog Post) is receiving cancer treatment and the posting of fellow Caringbridge patient Trevor Tredaway just yesterday led me to select "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" as our feature for this week. Let me just add that one of my most endearing posts, "A Character Named Andre' " that some of you may remember (see my August 3, 2005 Blog Post) fits prominently into this weeks selection, as Andre was a Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma patient and one of my best friends in life. This is merely an explanation of how my mind operates! I've always loved Julie Andrews and her career is unrivaled for the variety of roles she has played--and continues playing--(including those where real-life husband Blake Edwards cast her--each role a delight). More than a year ago she was reunited with Christopher Plummer in a legendary "live" television stage broadcast of "On Golden Pond". Now to our movie._____ Filmed and directed by Robert Wise, who worked non-stop on the films: "The Sand Pebbles" (1959), "West Side Story" (1961), "The Great Escape" (1963) and later "The Sound of Music" (1965), this is the worldwide beloved musical featuring composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II. It is based on a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse of the real-life events of Maria Von Trapp's memoir, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers". The original Broadway production opened in 1959 and was the final musical project of Rodgers and Hammerstein. While certain liberties were undertaken for the film, Maria von Trapp is said to have loved the Broadway play, but she hated the movie. Inspired by a 1956 German film about the Trapp Family Singers, stage director Vincent Donohue thought that the play was a perfect fit for the late actress Mary Martin. Believe it or not, my late friend Andre', who owned a limousine company in Texas, came to know Mary Martin from his days as her limo driver in Switzerland and she became a dear friend of his. Mary later became a regular client of Andre' in Texas before he and I became good pals. Mary Martin, by the way, is the mother of actor Larry Hagman of television's "I Dream of Jeannie" and later "Dallas". I actually met Hagman and Patrick Duffy on a shooting location in Dallas, Texas. But I digress. You may not know this, but originally "The Sound of Music" was not slated to become either a musical or a film. Broadway producers Leland Hayward and Richard Halliday (real-life husband of Mary Martin) envisioned a non-musical play with music from The Trapp Family Singers. But ultimately all new music was added. The play was not well received by critics and this led Martin to make the comment it was nevertheless "a triumph over the critics"--something we all should remember in our own worthy life endeavors that meet resistance from morons. I like that phrase: "A Triumph Over the Critics". HA! Very defiant, isn't is? Okay, fast forward to 1965 and a number of songs from both the musical and particularly the movie went on to become standards. They include "The Sound of Music", "Edelweiss", "My Favorite Things", "Climb Ev'ry Mountain", and "Do-Re-Mi".
_____ The role of Sister Maria (Julie Andrews) involves a young girl who dreamed of becoming a nun from childhood. However, reality has a way of revealing that not all is as it would seem, and a rebellious streak finds Maria in conflict with the convent. When a widowed Naval Captain, Baronness George Von Trapp requests a governess to watch his seven rowdy children who have run off several other governesses, Maria is given a reprieve from life at the convent and finds that she has stepped into a household of children whose widower grieving father rules them with the same discipline he uses on his naval ship. Unlike the previous governesses, Maria recognizes that the seven children only need love to change their mistrusting behavior, and she uses her love of music to create bond with them. Through her love, the children learn to find joy in the smallest things --from raindrops on the window panes to life waiting to the beauty of the outdoors. Baron Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) is a case study in a hardened man who is a pill for Maria. However, the Captain learns to open his heart to feelings he had forgotten through Maria's love of music and its power to transform the children's lives and their own. As the two gradually fall in love, their world is threatened by the 1938 Nazi takeover of Austria, and their demands that Captain von Trapp assume a position in the German Navy. A great film! ACADEMY AWARD WINNER, 1966: Best Director: Robert Wise; Best Film Editing: William Reynolds; Best Music, Scoring of Music, Adaptation or Treatment; Irwin Kostal; Best Picture: Robert Wise; Best Sound: James Corcoran and Fred Hynes; Best Actress in a Leading Role: Julie Andrews; Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Peggy Wood. Writing credits: Howard Lindsay (book) & Russel Crouse (book); Screenplay: Ernest Lehman; Maria von Trapp (book: "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers". ___ The Cast: Julie Andrews is Maria; Christopher Plummer is Captain Von Trapp; Eleanor Parker is The Baroness; Peggy Wood is Mother Abbess; Charmian Carr is Liesl; Heather Menzies is Louisa; Nicholas Hammond is Friedrich; Duane Chase is Kurt; Angela Cartwright is Brigitta; Debbie Turner is Marta and Kym Karath is Gretl. _____ ENJOY! Thursday, May 29, 2008MEET TREVOR TREDAWAY- HE NEEDS US!
_____ For those of you just joining us this morning, I had blogged on 05/12/08 about another new friend of mine named Gunner Gillespie who is 7. Both Gunner and Trevor love trains. And they are both fun, energetic, vivacious little boys who deserve the chance to grow up and live full, rich lives. But there's an obstacle that is threatening their lives and it is cancer of the brain stem. Now before some of you turn away, please give me a chance and read on! This form of cancer is so brutal and unforgiving, that I feel compelled to "step in the arena and draw my sword" --so to speak--to stand with these children. I want you to join me and it won't cost you anything but it will fill your heart with Love. And no one can tell me that the world doesn't need this more than ever. _____ "We, me especially, have really been struggling with the fact that the doctors want to start Trevor on a 3rd chemo drug with no known benefits in children. It is used to prolong life in adults with very aggressive brain tumors. The data on its effectiveness in children will not be available for 1-2 more years. Trevor is very sensitive to medications: i.e: after his first chemo treatment, his jaw pain was so severe that he couldn't swallow; he hallucinated after taking Ativan; all of the nausea and vomiting. Frankly, chemo just scares me. It is the only option other than radiation. Dr. Murray told us what will, not could, happen if we have to radiate. He said that there is an almost a 100% guarantee that Trevor will suffer from some form of retardation. That is not an option for him.The tumor remains stable, BUT there is an area of the tumor that is concerning to the doctors. It looks as if part of the tumor could be a little bigger. Also, the "spots" on his spine are confirmed tumors. Well, as confirmed as can be without doing a biopsy of his spine. The tumors on his spine have not changed since January. So, the brain tumor metastasized into his spine. They treat tumors of the spine with the same chemo drugs as they do the brain. This has never been verbalized until today, but Trevor basically has brain and spine cancer._____ "The response from the community has been completely overwhelming. I guess the greatest thanks will occur when I can write that 'Trevor is cured', which will happen. Until then, all I can say is Thank you so much to everyone participating in any type of event for the Triumph for Trevor."Closing thought from Michael: When I was Trevor's age, I spent two weeks in a hospital intensive care unit and my life was saved. The following year at age 8, a bicycle accident sent me right back into that same hospital, and by the Grace of God, I am here this morning in Arizona writing to you as an adult. I was lucky. I had a chance. And now, it is time for Trevor to have that same kind of chance. Just as I did with Gunner, I have a good idea of how we can help Trevor and his family. First and foremost, I feel certain that I can say that prayers are welcomed and encouraged. For those of you who don't pray, meditations, good vibes and healthy positive thoughts and shout-outs are also welcomed. Caringbridge, a non-profit organization has enabled the families of these two fine young boys, Trevor and Gunner to communicate with and keep each of us informed who care to offer Love and Supportiveness through their Journal at: http://caringbridge.org. _____ Since many people are asking, here is a fund that has been established to help The Tredaway Family with their extraordinary medical expenses:Trevor Tredaway Fund Citizens Federal Credit Union P.O.Box 51070 Midland , TX 79710 ___ I know this is a heartbreaking subject, but God Bless You All for taking the time to visit today. I wrote it because I believe these children can WIN! Love, Michael Wednesday, May 28, 2008WAKE UP WITH TERASBETONI!
Yeah, well before you thank me for this (a humorous assumption), I have to thank my friend Maria of "Nightspell World" for introducing me to this band from Finland. Just a heads-up, I had planned a Blog on something cool that Bruce Springsteen did recently. But that will be posted later. I just sincerely felt this would be a fun way for you to ---in the words of the late Jim Morrison here..."WAKE UP!"
Tuesday, May 27, 2008REWIND: "THE INTERVIEW" WITH MY GUEST DENNY SHANE! (CONCLUSION).
MM: Okay, let's shift gears a bit. I happen to know you were close friends with a lady in my industry, the late Television News Anchor Jessica Savitch. What do recall most about this lovely lady? __ DS: I first met Jess so many years ago. I was invited to a party at a local Congressman's apartment and Jess had just moved into the building. This is where our friendship began and lasted right up until her horrible death. (Jessica and her husband were returning home from dinner one night, when an automobile accident caused their station wagon to flip upside down in a ravine and they drowned). She was an amazing woman, well educated, well spoken and really funny and simply loved to laugh. Her smile really did light up and entire room. There is no doubt that had she lived she would be sitting at the desk of the ABC Nightly News right now. Jess simply had the right stuff, at the right time. __ MM: She was a terrific girl. Let's say a young person asked you for advice today on how best to find their direction in life, what might you tell them? __ DS: I would tell them they would be better off calling the AAA for directions. My life has been filled with so many U-turns, sudden stop-signs, dead ends I wouldn't give anyone direction, except follow your heart and your intuition. __ MM: You are certifiably a lover of The Arts. Tell us what music you enjoy and what book you happen to be reading at the moment? __ DS: It might be easier to tell you what I don't like. However, I like Classic Rock & Roll: Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly. I wasn't around prior to Rock & Roll, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for The Original Ink Spots. So classy. I do like Opera, and since moving to Texas I have come to grips with a new appreciation of Country and Western. As far as the book I happen to be reading at the moment? Don't laugh! "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelly. Yesterday someone asked me a question, and for some reason I thought the answer was contained in the book. I found myself flipping through the pages looking for the answer and suddenly I realized I wasn't flipping anymore and actually reading. With that I simply turned to page 1 and began. Presently I am up to the good part where they are making their selection of a new brain! __ MM: When and how did you develop your study of Theology and the various belief systems? __ DS: Michael, it's amazing how you can go from Music right into a good zinger like Theology, and in the next question asking about a perfect date. __ MM: Hey, I go with the flow! _ DS: Lot's of laughs! How did I develop my study of Theology? Quite frankly it all started with my family history many years ago. As I researched and discovered new members of my family it became much more than adding a name, birth and death dates. I dug into what their lives were like when they were alive. I found myself drifting off into their time period. The more questions I had, the further I dug. Then I made an astonishing discovery in that I have a direct line from the Merovingian line in France directly down to little ole me. I think at that point I realized why I was so consumed with researching my family history. There was a reason and I had found it. Many years ago, after corresponding with many direct descendants of the line, I came across Opus Dei and contacted the organization. Within a relatively short time I became a full fledged member and today share in membership with 84,000 people over every continent of the world. __ MM: I regularly refer to you as a "Renaissance Man". You guys can charm the women to no end, so describe for us your ideal First Date? __ DS: This is an easy one for me. Actually, didn't I just describe my ideal first date a few days ago on your blog? _ MM: You did, but who reads my BLOG? Please. Humor me! _ DS: Anyway, it is midnight as we sit huddled together on the Spanish Steps, laughing and giggling about nothing. Sharing a gelato at Giolitti, holding hands while we walked quietly in the gardens at Palatine Hills. Being bold and naughty in the catacombs under the Borghese Gallery and finally resting in each other's arms inside Nero's Golden Palace. All the time Ravel's Bolero is quietly escalating in the background! I don't think I should go any further here. __ MM: "Bold and naughty..."Come on! You're leaving us on the edge of our seats! It's as if the film just broke in the theater and the audience is yelling (impersonating the audience) "Boooo! Booooooo!" Speaking for myself, I was disappointed at the outcome of the Russian woman we all came to know and love as "Olga". Any desire to write a book--an expose like Elvis' bodyguards did on the subject, as in: "Olga, What Happened?" __ DS: (Melodramatic and serious) "Olga! Olga! Wherefore are thou Olga? You slut. I thought about a book, "Jumping Up and Down On My Heart: And then kicking it 40 yards for a field goal!" Your readers will simply have to go to my blog and find the Olga posts and read about the torrid affair. Lots of Laughs! But the really funny thing happened a few days ago. A while ago I joined a postcard club. You are randomly given 5 names worldwide and you send out a post card to each person, then 5 other people are given your name and address and they do the same. It goes on and on. I guess I have about 100 different postcards from all over the world from an assortment of people, not all quite normal I might add. Anyway, last week I get a postcard from Russia, actually blasting me for making fun of Olga. They went into how Russian females are sincere, blah, blah, blah and then signed the card, "Olga". I nearly died! Lots of Laughs! __ MM: Sounds like they threw you a 'Molotov Cocktail'? We could compare dating experiences, Denny. At least you get closure. I get, "He's too nice. This can't be real". Then I walk the streets looking for a Digital Jukebox to play The Doors' "The End". All of which leads me to ask: What is your favorite word and why? __ DS: Wow! now I really do have to think here. I think I would have to say a 'kiss-ass'. As you know, I loved politics and that profession is full of them. As I rose up the ladder of success I had to do a lot of it, but once I got there I made sure I surrounded myself with even more kiss-assers. It did wonders for my ego. __ MM: Really? Let me make some notes in case I become a raging success. Okay, what is your least favorite word and why? __ DS: Geez, I should have seen this one coming down the pike. Well, I would guess my least favorite word should be a word that I rarely, if ever, use in everyday language. After really thinking hard about this question and the answer (I am not allowed to think really hard because of the potential for more strokes), I would have to say that desconfianza fits the bill. To help you, I'll use it in a sentence, 'When I was in politics I grew to desconfianza members of the opposite party'. How was that? You didn't say it had to be an English word now, did you? _ MM: Oh, no! It's "Open Mike Night" here. You know me! Now, a delicious subject. Kelly Monaco. You did a series of Blogs about this Playboy Playmate and I want to ask you what intrigues you most about her? - DS: What intrigues me the most about her? Are you kidding Michael? Have you ever really looked at her? Let me put it this way. From her head to her toes. No, wait. That's too general from her neck to her ankles. Wait, I can do better. From her shoulder blades to her kneecaps. If I get any more specific about my interest you'll never be able to print this interview. - MM: Oh yes I will! Trust me. Okay, I won't push my luck. New question. How did you come to embrace a love of Opera and what Music interests you? - DS: This is a trick question, right? Didn't I answer this one before? Anyway, I've always loved Opera. The flow of the music and the words. The powerful voices of the great tenors: Enrico Caruso, Mario Lanza and Luciano Pavarotti. Many people may disagree with me here but I only mention those three tenors because there have been only three great tenors in the Opera world. Oh I know, I know, there's what-his-name and the other guy and I know deep down they have this immense hatred for Pavarotti (Denny's referring to Jose' Carreras and Placido Domingo) but hey, if ya got it, ya got it. If ya don't, you don't. And he's got it and they don't. What music? Hmmmm, can I say I like everything except things I don't understand like Rap? That's pretty much it. No, wait! There's also World Fusion, Ska, Hip Hop, Some New Age, Mictronal, Funk and the ever unpopular Electronica. - MM: Electronica? That's funny!!...See, I learn something new every day. Now I'm going into a record store to ask if they have an "Electronica Section"! Okay, back to being serious. If you had 3 wishes, what would they be? - DS: I only get 3 wishes? - MM: Yup. - DS: Well, I could not wish for world peace. What? No world peace you ask? Well, assuming I wished for world peace and we got what I wished for, can you imagine all of the sorrow and sadness there would be in the world? Right off the bat, all of the people associated with the news media would be layed off and fired. Do you know how many people that would be on a global scale? I shudder to even think about it. I could not fathom Larry King in a food line, begging for rotted potatoes. Now that I have ruined the world with the first wish, I don't think I better go into numbers 2 and 3. __ MM: What do your children make of your BLOGSITE, "My Anything But Normal Life"? __ DS: One of the things I am most proud of with my children is the fact that they have well-functioning brains. They are intelligent, well-rounded and cosmopolitan. And as such, they refuse to read my Blog. Now if I could only get my 80 year old parents off my back and stop reading it I would be happy. Geez put ONE naked picture in there and I am suddenly going to Hell in a flaming basket! __ MM: IN-A-FLAMING-BAS-KET! (me laughing hysterically while Denny waits for me to recover). Oh, God! That kills me. A flaming basket! Okay. I'm alright. Now, the big question: What lies ahead for Denny Shane? __ DS: Well, for one thing, now that this interview is over I am heading down to Shaunessey's and getting a double Jack Daniels with a rot gut chaser. __ MM: Eww! __ DS: No, just kidding! Actually, barring any more unforeseen strokes I would like to travel again, and head back to Rome. No, actually, I would like my blog to be syndicated and I would actually make money off of it. No, no wait! I am writing a new book, entitled "Chat Room Psycho" and it would be nice if it debuted in the #1 spot on the NY Times Best Seller List. No, after careful consideration, I liked my first idea. Slainte! __ MM: Okay, well look. I reserve the right to come back here and check in with you in the future. Denny Shane! His Link is on my Blog site off to the Right margin. Just scroll down to "My Anything But Normal Life". A great friend, a very funny fellow, a fascinating life thus far and God Willing with much more ahead...and who knows. Kelly Monaco? Hey, Kelly Monaco!: If the Internet crawler picks this up (and of course it will) and your Agent passes this along, I can vouch for Denny. He's a Class Act and you should at least go out with him twice. Thanks a million, my friend. It's been a Joy! ####
And that was how it went. Monday, May 26, 2008REWIND: "THE INTERVIEW" WITH MY GUEST DENNY SHANE! (PART 1 OF 2 )
_____
SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL: _____ In the relatively short time I have been a blogger, I cannot tell you how many wonderful people have left the Blogging world (much to my personal regret) due to a multitude of reasons. There have been personal responsibilities, marriages, heartbreaks that sadly proved to be insurmountable and just plain "burn out". Denny Shane was averaging 129 comments per day when his Blog peaked. When I started www.MichaelManning.tv "The Official Site" in 2004, Denny was among a handful of bloggers I came to know with some regularity, along with Bud Buckley, Deni Bonet (Last Girl On Earth) , Michele Agnew, Lois Lane (Lois Lane's Home Fires) and Patti (The Monogram Queen).Last summer, Denny Shane, who created one of the most eccentric, hilarious, fun, warm hearted, self deprecating and thought-provoking Blog sites ("My Anything But Normal Life") suffered a series of small strokes in rapid succession over a several week period. A former Federal Court Judge with a background that is among the most fascinating of anyone I have run across, Denny Shane's meteoric rise in the Judicial system was cut short by a major stroke he suffered several years ago. Still, his refusal to cave in resulted in a Blog from his home in Houston, Texas that was (without exaggeration) one of the most widely read in the world of Blogging. _____ _____ Few people have matched the sheer heights of a judicial career and exposure to politicians and celebrities alike than Denny Shane. In what was fated to become one of our last our last conversations, I was living in the Mid-West (and miserable) when my cell phone rang at 10 PM. I was driving and pulled my car over to park and noticed a strange area code on my phone. When I answered the call I didn't recognize the caller and he certainly didn't introduce himself. I asked who was speaking? It didn't take long for me to know. "Now who else do you know in Houston, Texas?" It was Denny Shane! For the next hour, Denny peppered the conversation about his physical challenges with humor. For example, he told me that he had driven his car back to his apartment complex garage after a trip to the grocery. He stopped to let an elderly lady walk across the garage to access the elevators. Instead, she walked up to Denny's car (he had his driver's door window rolled down and the engine idling, of course) and proceeded with the following volley: Elderly Lady to Denny: "Are you alive?" Denny: "Well, obviously I am, or I wouldn't be stopped here waiting for you to walk to the elevators so I can park my car". Next, came this gem: "Get this. The other day I'm at the doctor's office and I ask the guy, 'should I be taking this pill or not?' And ya know what he does? He asks me: 'Well, what do you think? Should you?' And I'm thinking, what an idiot! I'm saying to myself, this guy went all the way through Medical School and here he is asking me...a former Federal Judge and a Lawyer whether or not I should be taking this pill? How the hell do I know? It could kill me!" We shared about 20 minutes more of sheer laughter. I knew Denny's situation was tough. What I admire most about Denny is how he chose to "respond" and not "react" to his condition. He started to Blog about how to recognize the early signs and symptoms of stroke. He even started a separate section on his website devoted to stroke research. And yes, while he created the graphics, photos and irresistible stories of mayhem and laughter by typing with only one finger for many hours, we were treated to stories so hilarious, I wanted to submit Denny's life story to "60 Minutes" for consideration of a future installment. From meeting the late President John F. Kennedy, to sneaking past the guards at the Vatican and running to the glassed-in underground cove where the Pope's are buried, to posting a pin up photo of Playboy Playmate Kelly Monaco as his idea of the ideal wife, Denny is a riot! One of our last e-mails went like this: Me to Denny: "Hey! I just read that if you step out of the shower wringing wet and answer your cell phone, you could get electrocuted." Denny to Me : "Give me 10 minutes and call me. Let's see if it works!" __ With the stubbornness of a Bull Dog, while Denny's situation has remained tenuous since last August, I want to make certain our friend is Honored with Love and NOT forgotten. And so it is in the spirit of Love and Friendship that I feel so moved to re-post my 3rd Guest appearance on my website feature "THE INTERVIEW" featuring Denny. Most of you on my Blogroll were not with me long enough to have known Denny. But to give you a sense of our fun camaraderie, in the days following this post, I ran photos of attractive Playboy Playmates (each of them clothed by the way) appearing to be speaking to Denny with outrageous captions under the photos. Bloggers (and especially Denny) had several "field days" with this antic and Denny thoroughly enjoyed himself. To Denny's family: his parents, siblings and his children: If you are reading this, I have a message to pass along to Denny as he continues to comeback: My Dear Friend: You have no idea how much you are missed by your fellow Bloggers. Your friendship has meant so much to us. I miss you! We all miss you! And I refuse to take down your site from my Blogroll until you come back and rejoin us. No worries. We'll be right here! Lots of Love!!! ___ THE FOLLOWING INTERVIEW WAS POSTED IN APRIL, 2006. HERE IS HOW IT WENT DOWN. ENJOY! ____ If ever there was a "Renaissance Man" with a big heart and a sense of humor that exceeds the old Rowan & Martin Comedy Show on TV, it's got to be Denny. A retired Philadelphia Judge, his political career began as a teenager in the 1960's campaigning for President John F. Kennedy. Denny would secretly slip photos of Kennedy into his newspapers along his paper route. In what can only be described as a scene from "Saturday Night Live", Kennedy's motorcade accidentally hit Denny's father's car. So, he was officially "tapped" for politics! An Honorable Discharge after 4 years of service in the Navy, Denny served 20 years in many offices from local Committeeman to Judge and Administrator of the State of Pennsylvania. Amazingly, Denny was invited to dinner at the White House 3 times with President Reagan, President Ford, and President Bush, Sr. _____ He has also met President Truman, President Kennedy, and President Eisenhower. His hands-on involvement in the community include positions as President of Kensington Burial Grounds, Paler Cemetery; Co-Founder of the Fisher Civic Association; and the Mayor's Committee on Economic Development. His Honors are numerous and impressive: Leadership Award presented by President Gerald Ford, Letter of Commendation presented by President Jimmy Carter, United States Congressional Certificate for Community Service, Citations from The Pennsylvania House of Representatives, Pennsylvania State and Philadelphia City Council, The Big Brother "Good Guy" Award, Shackamaxon Boys Club Award and a Citation for Leadership from the Board of Trustees from the Kensignton Burial Ground. _____ He has traveled 5 of the 7 continents of the world before retiring to Texas to start 2 computer companies. After selling his companies, he traveled to a resort island off the Coast of Belize in Central America. A proud father of 5 children, his daughter is a Lawyer, his two sons are in the Investment Management business, and of course you'll remember his two darling little girls we've seen on Denny's Blogsite; they are in the 1st and 4th grades. Although a young man, Denny suffered a heart attack and 3 strokes. Thank God for us he is a true survivor! And he has managed to "keep on keeping on" by making all of us laugh with wit and humor intact. He told me I could ask him anything, so I did. Here we go! We cover a lot of ground here from our divided country, the Saddam Hussein Trail, funny pranks, Playboy Playmates and what adds up to an extraordinary life. _____ MM: Before I ask you about Playboy Playmate Kelly Monaco, it's obvious to me that you've suffered through some very big health set backs. What do you think was the single most definitive reason you were a survivor? What gave you the resolve to fight on? DS: The single, most definitive reason? That's easy. I don't like to lose. Years ago my secretary once told me that I had better slow down and that if I didn't, God has ways of making me slow down. I laughed at her and waved my hand as I ran down the hall towards my next meeting. Well, God sent me a heart attack and I didn't slow down at all. So along comes the 1st stroke, a little slower, then the 2nd stroke, a bit more slower, then finally the 3rd one, now a blind turtle on crutches could beat me in a race. If I got any slower, they could hang a wreath on me for Memorial Day. Laugh. MM: Take us through a reasonable ordinary day for such an unordinary guy (Shanes Blogsite is entitled "My Anything But Normal Life")? DS: Geez, an ordinary day? I don't think I have ever had an ordinary day in my life. I go to bed early, around 10 PM nowadays, and then wake up and begin my day anywhere between 1 AM and 4 AM. I was never big on sleeping anyways. The first thing I do is make my way to the kitchen and put on the coffee. Next, I turn on the computer and then finally into the bathroom. Once all of that is completed I sit down to begin my day and write my Blog. I know, I know, my Blog always seems so organized and well-thought out. But the truth is I sit down and haven't the foggiest idea what I am going to write until my finger touches the first key on the keyboard. Laugh. I like to be fresh. After that I try and read a little, maybe an hour. Then I turn to work--actually my life's work it seems. I've been doing my family history for just about 30 years. It started many years ago after Alex Haley's "Roots" was shown on television. I was bitten by the bug and began the search. I was thrilled with myself after writing down about 20 names. I say writing because we didn't have computers quite yet. Gasp! It became much easier to organize myself once that first Commodore 64 was released! Anyway, here I am..hold on, let me get an exact count. Okay, 26,195 people later and still going. Every day I find just one more person. I can go for hours researching. One clue leads to another and so on. It has been a real trip. I am so glad I will have something worthwhile to hand down to my children. After that I chat with people on the internet and on Blogs. Then it's onto the supermarket! Since I can't shop like I once did all at once for the week. I now go everyday or other day to make the load a little more manageable. Are you all bored yet? Lot's of Laughs! MM: Outside of my oldest brother you are the only person I know who shook hands with President John F. Kennedy. Give us a "thumb nail" impression-so to speak--of each of the Presidents you've met? DS: Wow! now this is a tall order. Many of the older Presidents like Truman and Eisenhower I met at Kennedy's Inauguration. I was a newspaper boy for the Philadelphia Bulletin and began my political career by slipping unauthorized pictures of Kennedy into the newspapers before putting them in the doors of customers. You can't even imagine how proud a 13 year old kid could have been when I went around the next day delivering the newspaper and saw the pictures I inserted displayed in the windows of my customers. Anyway, to make a long story short, I won a contest that the Bulletin was running for the carriers. The grand prize was a trip to Kennedy's Inauguration and actually attending one of the earlier in the day parties. The big day came and I had to make my way to Pennsylvania Station to get the train to Washington. It snowed so much it was waist high and my parents weren't going to let me go to it. I think I cried and rolled around on the floor until they finally said "OK" just to get rid of me. At this after-event party I met JFK and shook hands, and I just knew he would be great. I instantly fell in love with Jacqueline when I shook her hand. I got to meet Harry S. Truman, a very definitely grandfatherly type who showed his years and the troubles he had to bear on his shoulders. Dwight Eisenhower was a tall, stern grandfatherly type, and Mamie was funny. Even though another great guy, but not a president was Douglas MacArthur. To be honest I can't remember what I thought when I met him. After that day I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. As I moved up in the world of politics, both locally and somewhat nationally I was invited to the White House 3 times for dinner: Reagan, Ford and Bush, Sr. I sat there and looked around all 3 times and thought "Look at me, a little kid from Fish Town in Philly, having dinner with the President in the White House! Absolutely unbelievable! Reagan was a very friendly, exceptionally friendly guy with enormous charisma. Ford was every one's dad, just a really nice guy. Bush was a little bit more reserved but polite and nice. I actually liked Barbara more. Lot's of Laughs! The one President that I got along with amazingly well but never met in person was Richard Nixon. We became honest to goodness pen pals that lasted right up until his death in 1994. He was a genuine man. It's truly regrettable that he will be remembered for the Watergate fiasco and he was to bear out Marc Anthony's words, "that the good that men do are oft interred with their bones." MM: I really sensed that too. How interesting. You know I have to ask you this. The War on Terror. You are an astute observer. What are we doing that is right and what are we doing wrong? DS: Oh my God, this could take days to answer. Right? Our intentions were good. Wrong? Just about everything. Can I just leave it at that? I haven't taken my pills yet this morning. Lot's of Laughs! MM: Sure. That's fine. So-called Activist Judges who allegedly mischaracterize the Constitution. What are your views on this? DS: They mischaracterize the Constitution to suit their own damn political views. They cave in to political groups du jour. Your pushing my buttons now Michael. Lot's of Laughs! I honestly don't know where they find some of these bozos, and from BOTH sides of the aisle, Republican AND Democrat. Let's move on, shall we? MM: That's fine. I know you have been watching the trial of Saddam Hussein and I'd love to hear your impression of what is going on at this point and what should happen? DS: Well, I sit and draw correlations between their system and our system. I strongly believe in giving a defendant his or her time to express their feelings, however, not only is Saddam making a mockery of the trials but I find fault with the Judges for allowing him to do so. They have no control over the proceedings. The present Judge has somewhat control and exercises his duty sparingly. The previous Judge that quit should be removed from office, period. As to what should happen? I'm not quite sure what you mean here but as to the verdict, etc.? I have a feeling that he will be found guilty on all counts. Sentencing should be immediate and carried out even faster, the same day preferably. There should be no retrial, no re-examination of the evidence, the only motion needed is the hangman placing the rope around his neck securely. MM: I'm going to ask you about the pulse of our country. In my own field (broadcasting) Dick Clark Productions telephoned me here at home and turned down a positive show for children and adults citing that the country is just too pessimistic (and addicted to "Shock Television" where 19 year old anorexic babes in bikinis eat worms to win contests) to watch a 'Feel Good Show'. Amy Grant nothwithstanding. Otherwise they loved it. What is your view, Denny? Where are we as a nation? DS: I think the American electorate has been so bombarded with scandals, ignorance, misappropriations, you name it that they can't help but be disenfranchised. Unfortunately, they are choosing the wrong way of showing their disapproval. They should vote for a person and immediately watch this person in action. The eventual cure for unresponsive politicians is that voting lever. If the elected offical does not perform to OUR expectations, they kick him out and send in a replacement and keep doing it over and over until the right person gets into office. ____ ALL: Tomorrow we pick up and conclude with Denny's recollections of his friendship with the late television news reporter, Jessica Savitch and much more! Sunday, May 25, 2008PROTECTION FOR ABANDONED PETS FROM HOME FORECLOSURES!
These two photos say it all. I hope this BLOG leads at least one person to adopt an abandoned pet from a "Foreclosed" home here in the USA. If it does, please share! Sarah McLachlan is so attractive and cool. Apologies to the guys in Blogland, but I hate to disappoint you; this BLOG POST is about another topic (but Sarah shares the same concern!).__ While debates will continue about the damage of adjustable mortgages and the enthusiastic, albeit, over-reaching people who were (in many cases) cheated by unscrupulous Realtors, the ASPCA reports that "..families who have lost their homes and find themselves no longer able to keep their pets continue to pour in from around the United States. In New Haven, CT, where foreclosures have gone up 80 percent in the past year, local animal shelters receive an average of a call per day from someone who wants to surrender a pet. In Michigan, the Anti-Cruelty Society shelter has seen a 30-percent intake increase over the same period. And last week, the City of Los Angeles, CA, issued a press release revealing that LA Animal Service’s intake of pets rose 16 percent in the first four months of 2008."California—arguably one the of states hit hardest by the sub-prime mortgage market collapse—is leading the way in the creation of new legislation that attempts to address this issue. The California State Legislature is now considering Assembly Bill 2949, which would allow bank representatives to immediately seek potentially life-saving help for animals abandoned at foreclosed properties. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier, and is cosponsored by the ASPCA and the California Animal Association. “The ASPCA urges pet parents faced with foreclosure to bring their pets to a proper animal shelter if unable to place them with friends or family,” says Californian Jill Buckley, ASPCA Senior Director of Legislative Services. “With the increasing numbers of property abandonment's, more and more animals are being left behind to fend for themselves. This bill will help these animals obtain the proper care and attention they need.” ALL: Assembly Bill 2949 will move to the Senate for consideration. Please visit The ASPCA Press Room to read more about it! Thank God there is Hope for these innocent cats and dogs who need a loving home. __ Hey, thanks for stopping by today!Sincerely, Michael Saturday, May 24, 2008DUDLEY MOORE & CLEO LAINE CD DISCOVERY!
This CD is a gem. The vinyl's are long gone, and to be honest I have looked for this recording for years, as it was once part of my collection. The basic story is that for over 20 years, Dudley and Cleo talked about recording together after the May Ball in England many moons ago. Just one year after the movie "10" was released, they finally connected with bass player Ray Brown, and a drummer whose name escapes me (yes I know, one is not supposed to admit these things in a BLOG, but what do you want me to do, lie?). Anyway, Moore always loved jazz and while his chops as an accompanist here is crisp and terrific, it is clear by Track 6 that this was a true labor of love for two souls who once dated, and then went on to marry others while remaining close friends. Cleo Laine is simply one of my favorite jazz singers. And I once came close to attending a concert of hers years ago. Something came up (God only knows what) and I always said "Well, I'll catch her next time". A dangerous practice if used too often in life. I much prefer a "Carpe Diem" approach now. As a stylist, Cleo is incomparable on "I'll Be Around" and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love". In fact, she is a jazz great in an always tough genre to make a living in. All in all, this is good fun, and great music making from two close friends who love the music as much as they adored each other. If you can snag a CD, enjoy it! As a superb pianist with sensibilities that were borne of genius, Dudley's performance is as delightful here as he was in "10" (even with all the drama his character had going on). I mean, what other guy could pull off recording "Live from an Airplane Hangar" ? A delight. A Joy! Ciao for now... Track Listings 1. I Don't Know Why (I Just Do) /Love Me or Leave Me 2. When I Take My Sugar to Tea 3. I'll Be Around 4. Strictly for the Birds 5. Before Love Went out of Style 6. Soft Shoe 7. Smilin' Through 8. I Can't Give You Anything But Love 9. Friday, May 23, 2008THE SUCCESS STORY OF THE YEAR!
Last Sunday afternoon, I opened my e-mail and found a message from First Officer Handel Wellington of Spirit Airlines (pictured above) asking me to telephone him, and here's my success story of the year. While staying at a Hilton Hotel during my relocation, I was using the computer in the hotel's Business Lounge. Many pilots were overnighting from a regional airline whose name I couldn't help but overhear. When the other pilots left the room, I casually struck up a conversation with Handel and learned that he too flew with his comrades for a deeply troubled carrier (I won't name out of respect for what they truly tried to accomplish). The fact of the matter is that their business plan is impaired. I'm no expert, but after 14 years of covering commercial aviation as a journalist, I asked Handel if I could give him my feedback on his employer. The airline he flew for when we had this conversation is about to collapse any week now. I was frank, and told him he needed to get the hell out of a very bad situation before the company came crashing down on his career dreams. A fine young man, we shook hands and talked for about 30 minutes about my recent interview published in Airways magazine last February with the always colorful Gordon Bethune, best-selling author of the book, "From Worst To First"--the true tale of how as CEO, he and his employees turned around a battered Continental Airlines (today ranked the best among the "Big 6" to fly). I saw a bright and determined young man who was about to be out of a job. So, I gave him the e-mail to Gordon's secretary and told him to "drop my name and make a brief introduction" after I called her to give her a "heads up"--which I did accomplish. My hope was that my referral would get Handel hired on at Continental. He never received a reply. (Gordon, I know you are "consulting" with the fellows over at Northwest Airlines with the pending Delta merger, but back then you had plenty of time to call my friend. You owe me a drink! Fly me in and we'll tie on a few benders!). _____ Over 6 months later, Handel called to thank me. As it turned out, he started taking a look at the company after listening to my feedback about what I thought was going very wrong with the airline, and he began seeing the problems I outlined. With this in mind, he began sending his resume out and today, Handel is proudly flying with a fine carrier--Spirit Airlines! Handel wanted to credit me for transitioning him from a regional carrier to a big airline where he now flies the Airbus A319 and A320's for Spirit. Unfortunately, I was NOT the reason Handel succeeded. I have an old saying. "I am merely a catalyst and a conduit" in the sense that I may not have "the answer" to some one's problem, or even be well versed in their industry. But I have a knack for networking them to someone who can. "There are no accidents" and we both agreed this was a matter of Faith, and I just happened to be placed in his path. Many people have helped me enormously along my own path in life. As I have mentioned in previous blogs, I learned to network from my late friend and former apparel industry president, Bob Maroon. Bob taught me that "Networking is nothing more than increasing the flow of quality people through your life". Recently, a friend called my way of living as "paying it forward"--a reference to the film, "Pay It Forward" starring Helen Hunt and Kevin Spacey. It's a nice compliment. But truth be told, it isn't accurate. I just sincerely feel that I have a responsibility to incorporate what I do for my friends in need into my life to the point where it has become as natural as breathing. And no people, this isn't being a braggart. In fact, where I have failed in my own life is occasionally forgetting that the rest of the population doesn't necessarily share my philosophy. _____ Regardless of what is or isn't happening in our own situations, we can take a step back by helping others. In so doing, we take a break and renew our own sanity and experience a good feeling of self worth, especially when the outcome is successful. I keep it simple. And yes, one thing I DO believe in, having become wise of the "ways of the world" (corporate America) is "What goes around, eventually comes around", and from the many blogs I read weekly, we each have experienced at least one boss from Hell who will eventually wind up there. So, keep the Faith! _____ Fortunately, Handel found his place with a great company--and it was HIS talent that carried him through the interview and screening process and not mine! But I am grateful to Handel for his kind words and I'm very proud of his achievement. So, when you fly Spirit Airlines, I can tell you that you will be in good hands with an exceptional pilot at the helm named Handel Wellington! May this story inspire all of you! _____ Listening to: a spate of Rolling Stone CD's after first researching interesting stories behind them. Today, it's the excellent "Voodoo Lounge". Thursday, May 22, 2008"FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT" PROUDLY PRESENTS: SAVE THE TIGER!
Can you believe that I have been waiting for "the right moment" to feature this movie for some 18 months? You may ask why this is so? I hate to put it this way, but while an absolutely excellent film that won an Academy Award, it's NOT for everyone. The opening scene involves what we likely refer to today as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD with the central character Harry Stoner (Jack Lemmon) awakening from a nightmare screaming. Filmed in 1973, this film is still relevant. Stoner tunes in his television set about the latest news about the war in Vietnam, takes a shower, makes breakfast and dresses as we all do to begin the day. A World War II Veteran, he is is obsessed by the years of his youth when President Roosevelt was in office, baseball was clean and integrity was the order of the day. This Oscar-Winning performance by Jack Lemmon is fascinating as it takes the audience through a 24-hour period in the life of the film's lead character. In this regard, if there was ever a movie to leave you with something to ponder, this is it.____ Harry Stoner owns a garment factory teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, though no one knows it; he keeps this very "close to the vest". He has all the trappings of success. His daughter is enrolled in a Swiss school; his wife thinks he's nuts; there is a gardener, a maid, a swimming pool service company and even a tree surgeon who all meticulously maintains his home. Psychologically, Stoner is treading water to avoid a breakdown. Lemmon turns in a performance here right after "The Days of Wine and Roses" wrapped. He is trying to make sense of a world that has left him feeling alienated. We see him, for example, cruising along Sunset Boulevard in his Lincoln where he picks up a 20-year-old girl who is hitch-hiking named Myra. Stoner is shocked how quickly she offers him sex-which he immediately declines. How times have changed for Stoner! _____ We come to know his employees back at the garment factory including the cutter, Meyer, a holocaust survivor and mentor to Rico, the ambitious young gay protege who are ready to kill each other over some arcane issue. Stoner intervenes. That evening, a fashion show is scheduled and Harry has to "talk business" with his associate Phil Greene (Oscar Nominee Jack Gilford). A customer who just placed a large order out of town suddenly dies of a coronary before Stoner can get his signature! Stoner refuses to file for bankruptcy and he definitely doesn't want the Mafia taking over, so arson seems to be an answer he struggles with as the day wears on and he meets with a 15 year veteran of arson in an X-rated movie house to consider the details. Moving on...another client will issue a buy order on the condition that Stoner provides a hooker as part of the transaction. This leads to an amusing scene and more erratic behavior from smoking dope with Myra and trying to breathe life into his marriage to becoming an animal rights activist! I won't reveal the rest except to include you in one scene typifying my sense of "KOOKY" humor. NOT TO BE MISSED: Watch for the scene where Stoner enters a disco and tries to dance and fit in. I almost fell on the floor when he threw his back out! Lemmon's facial expression will knock you over! I remember visiting his grave in Los Angeles last year. Even his headstone is a laugh. It reads "JACK LEMMON in..." I miss the hell out of exceptional actor and I dedicate this film to all of his fans like myself. _____ The Cast: Best Actor in a Leading Role Oscar Winner (1974) Jack Lemmon as Harry Stoner; Nominated as Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Jack Gilford as Phil Greene; Laurie Heineman is Myra; Norman Burton is Fred Mirrell; Patricia Smith is Janet Stoner; Thayer David is Charlie Robbins; William Hansen is Meyer; Harvey Jason plays Rico; Liv Lindeland is Ula; and Lara Parker is Margo. Nominated also for "Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced": Steve Shagan and Directed by John G. Alvidsen. _____ I've said it before, "This is one hell of a movie, kids!" _____ SIT BACK & ENJOY! _____ Listening to: The Rolling Stones' CD "Some Girls". It has been a long time, but like Ronnie Wood, I enjoy this effort. Wednesday, May 21, 2008Tuesday, May 20, 2008LOOK, THE FEDORA HAT IS BACK!
...19 years later, it's INDIANA JONES! Yes, Director Steven Spielberg is said to have done away with the George Lucas effects on this one, but the film reviewers at Cannes say it's great fun. Something to look forward to, eh? Cate Blanchett and John Hurt Co-Star. I am told (from sources I cannot divulge, lest I be killed) that this is no Godfather III. Calista Flockhart, thanks for allowing us to borrow back Harrison Ford. The film offerings of late have been sparse for the $9.50 (US) Admission fee. Monday, May 19, 2008FRAN DRESCHER-A GREAT LADY!
Hey, have you ever read about a wonderful story, even though it happened last year? I did. And it's worth sharing because most people probably do not know about this Congressional Bill that is so positive! So many women die needlessly from Ovarian Cancer, and speaking for myself as a man--I am shocked to read this year that the number of women taking advantage of free mammograms is statistically down. One of my favorite Actresses and Comedian's, the lovely and irrepressible Fran Drescher was behind this story and the Congressional Bill below!__ On December 26, 2007, President Bush signed an Omnibus spending bill that appropriated $6.5 million towards Johanna's Law, allowing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to launch a national campaign in 2008 to educate American women and health professionals about the signs and symptoms of gynecologic cancers. _____ ______ Johanna's Law was created by her sister Sheryl Silver. "By educating the public about the risk factors and symptoms of gynecologic cancers, Johanna's Law will help women recognize potentially dangerous symptoms and seek appropriate medical attention sooner", she said. However, what many of you (who are fans of actress and comedian Fran Drescher like me) may not realize is her role in the passage of this Bill._____ Here is what The Honorable Orin Hatch said: "I would like to acknowledge Ms. Fran Drescher who must deserve great credit for getting this legislation through the Congress. Her commitment to having this bill signed into law has been very impressive to me. Ms. Drescher has tirelessly visited with Members of Congress this entire week and will be staying in town until this legislation is passed by both Houses of Congress. _____ While I have known Fran for many years, it was gratifying to be reminded of her tremendous enthusiasm and her commitment to women's health. Ms. Drescher is extremely articulate when she was advocating for Johanna's law. And that is because as a cancer survivor herself, she is strongly committed to educating women about awareness and early detection of gynecologic cancers. _____ It was painful for me to hear her story. Over a period of two years, Ms. Drescher tried to get a diagnosis for her symptoms. She saw eight doctors before being told that she had uterine cancer. This should never happen. Ms. Drescher recognizes that women must know the early warning signs of all gynecologic cancers and which tests are available because women cannot assume that these tests will be offered to them. _____ In addition, she is the author of the book 'Cancer Schmancer' which discusses how she beat uterine cancer. Her dedication and commitment have made a tremendous difference and we all greatly appreciate her efforts. Mr. President, both Ms. Warren and Ms. Drescher are truly amazing women who have shown a selfless dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. I want a screening test to be developed so that it will be easier to diagnose gynecological cancers in the early stages of the disease. I am tired of women having limited health care options because of late stage diagnosis. This must change. But, I am hopeful that we can start to make a difference in the lives of all women the minute that this bill is signed into law. I urge my colleagues to support Johanna's Law." ___ President Bush signed Johanna's Law officially on January 12, 2007. This landmark legislation authorizes development of a national gynecologic cancer awareness campaign. ___ HAVE A GREAT WEEK, ALL!
Saturday, May 17, 2008Friday, May 16, 2008LET'S SPARK A BUD BUCKLEY REVOLUTION!
![]() ![]() HEY! BUD BUCKLEY IS THIS WEEK'S FEATURED ARTIST IN THE UK--SO THERE'S A DEADLINE TO BEAT! Thursday, May 15, 2008"FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT" PRESENTS: ARTHUR!
Good Evening! But no, not in the creepy sense that the late Alfred Hitchcock used to deliver that ostentatious greeting to us through the television. Rather, as in "I'm damn late with this post because life is what it is..._____ Having cleared that up, I've been receiving requests about featuring ARTHUR on "Friday Movie Suggestion Night" for some time. So, not only do I say "Sure, why the hell not?" But I must add that I am very proud to feature the above movie poster as a departure from the bath tub photo we all know. HA! Pretty swank, huh? I have a minor societal situation to bring up since this movie deals with a forced decision the main character must make as a single guy. Girls: "Are you influenced by money in a man?" I ask this because it just seems (as a general observation) that the Maxim magazine looking woman in my part of town appear to have their compass' set for emotionally abusive guys and a leased exotic sports car. Now then, onto Naturally Attractive and Down to Earth Girls who have us at "Hello": "Just out of curiosity, what is it with this fad of dating guys who look as if they have watched one too many news reels of NASA's 1960's Mercury space program?" Now, I am no prude nor a "stick in the mud" by any means. But trying to make sense of the dating choices I see "from the outside looking in" throughout my travels makes about as much sense to me as Kevin Federline announcing that he is lending his name to a new line of condoms! Do tell. All of which takes us to our movie of the week with Dudley Moore in ARTHUR! Oh, by the way...Can you believe Bud Cort was considered for this role? Scary kids. Scary... _____ Arthur Bach (Dudley Moore) is an alcoholic who is hysterically funny and an heir to a $750 million dollar fortune. He has no resume for reasons that are soon obvious, but he does have two servants, Hobson and Bitterman! Bach's father finally throws down the gauntlet: either Arthur marries boring and idiotic Susan Johnson (Jill Eikenberry--yes, yes of "L.A. Law", but that was later), or he'll be cut off and put out on the street! For the very first time in his storied life, he falls in love with a short-order waitress named Linda (Liza Minnelli). Now then, as I've alluded to above (in an admittedly jaundiced fashion), the question is: will Arthur choose the money or the girl?
___ The film is so much about Moore's maniacal and uncontrollable laugh, his demands, embarrassing himself in public and the exceptional chemistry we see between he and Liza Minelli. Mention must be made of Sir John Gielgud, who is equal to Sir Lawrence Olivier (in this authors opinion and others) as among the greatest Shakespearean actors of his generation. This is drunken laughing, knock down-drag out slapstick comedy and I must say, a great escape from ANY bar scene or observation on "the human condition" and the singles scene; it is a charming Joy! Writer and Director Steve Gordon tragically died young in his early 40's after this film wrapped. Sir John Gielgud WON an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor for this film in 1982. The Oscar for Best Music, Original Song went to Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, Christopher Cross and Peter Allen for the song "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)" performed by Christopher Cross. The Cast: Dudley Moore is Arthur Bach; Liza Minnelli is Linda Marolla; Sir John Gielgud is Hobson; Geraldine Fitzgerald is the tough Grandmother, Martha Bach; Jill Eikenberry is Susan Johnson; Stephen Elliott is Susan's father Burt Johnson; Ted Ross is Bitterman; Barney Martin is Linda's father Ralph Marolla; Thomas Barbour is Arthur's father Stanford Bach; and I must add that Anne De Salvo is Gloria the hooker! :D The film was Produced by Robert Greenhut and Charles H. Joffe.___ Now... ENJOY! Wednesday, May 14, 2008OKAY, LET'S DO IT!
You guys have been requesting this for three years. In a rare tip of my cards, let's have some fun this morning and particularly tomorrow. Let's just forget about our concerns and laugh some more--back to back. Let's see here. I've never featured two back-to-back "Bwa-ha-ha's" and in fact, I've never tipped my cards either. Oh, what the hell. There's always a "first time"! __ HAVE A GREAT WEDNESDAY!
Tuesday, May 13, 2008TUESDAY MORNING BOOKS I'M INTO...
Preparations for our 2009 4th Annual "Steve McQueen Film Festival" has started as a "work in progress". And I'm happy to announce a Link with McQueenonline.com starting next March when the festival resumes. Over the years, Ali MacGraw's 1990 book, "Moving Pictures" was my first read from Steve's second wife. While a labor of love in 2007, as I've documented here on this site, I worked phenomenally hard on the 2nd Annual Festival. This year, we adjusted the length and it was a huge hit. Afterwards, I enjoyed a careful and most enjoyable read of Barbara McQueen Brunsvold's "Steve McQueen: The Last Mile". Most recently, I was thrilled to order Neile McQueen Toffel's incredible revised book, "My Husband, My Friend". Written with pure Class and the wisdom Neile gained from her 15 plus year marriage to Steve, she was--as Robert Vaughn attests--of inestimable help in molding Steve's career. An extremely well written and open book, Neile celebrates the good times and the couple's gradual rise as a team. From building their lives and career from scratch along with parenthood, to 1968 when unresolved conflicts and difficulties annealed so deeply in Steve's youth that tortured him for life coincided in a parallel path with his meteoric fame that peaked in 1970 and his searing descent with mid-life, the new drug culture, abusiveness, destroyed friendships and ultimately (in shocking detail) the loss of his marriage to Neile. As Steve's one time Personal Assistant Mario Iscovich said of Steve during this self-destructive period, "He lost a great lady; he lost himself". Earlier, I used the word "incredible" because Neile wrote this book to come to terms with Steve's mercurial life and it's effect on her, but without bitterness. What emerges is Steve's often dark and complicated life blown out of proportion and on a perilous course fed only by fame that clouded his judgment and made him feel invulnerable._____ Back in 1970, there were no Betty Ford clinics, and face it. If we knew then what we know today about personality development and human behavior, with the therapies now available, I have to wonder if this would have changed many aspects of Steve's later years. Neile is above all, a survivor. Thankfully, she found lasting love with Alvin Toffel for 25 years. Sadly, Al died in 2005; Neile and Steve's beautiful daughter Terry passed away in 1998. A Mother to son Chad, and a Grandmother, Neile has embarked today on yet another chapter in her life with a return to Acting, Singing and Dancing. This book is written with endearment, forgiveness and uncommon insight from a still beautiful lady who has a CD due out shortly. She remains good friends with Steve's subsequent wives Ali and Barbara. This is the real story, a human story about a man torn by complications, yet who tried to the best of his individual ability to make things right in a young life cut short. I am looking forward to Neile's new CD as this lady is unstoppable and serves as an inspiration to the rest of us. I recommend this fine book.![]() The endlessly fascinating and breathtaking beauty of horses was brought across to me as a kid by my late cousin. And this hardbound book published just last summer by Nicola Jane Swinney is my current book on the mantle. _____ Finally "on deck" is a book I snapped up from a different antique shop than the Swinney book. Yes, "The Greatest Generation" by broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw. As Tom tells us, "They came of age during the Great Depression and the Second World War and went on to build modern America---men and woman whose everyday lives of duty, honor, achievement, and courage gave us the world we have today".
_____ With my parents in mind, who lived through this period of time, as I'm certain many of your parents did too, I am most curious about Tom's well received book. I'm back to playing guitar finally and that's about it from here!_____ HAPPY TUESDAY TO ALL! Monday, May 12, 2008UPDATE ON GUNNER GILLESPIE!
7 Year-Old Gunner Gillespie Needs Our Help _____ My gratitude to my friends Shannon and Amy Aldridge, who made one mention months ago on their Blog about a family from Benton, Kentucky whose son is facing a medical situation with cancer similar to their sweet Sahara. You may remember that last month, I wrote a full Blog about Gunner Gillespie with photos of Janna & Gus Gillespie--parents of Gunner and his sweet sister Garlynn--all featured in my post. In a short while, I'll have the pleasure of meeting The Gillespie's as they will be in my area to try a new medical therapy for Gunner. Naturally, their insurance company isn't covering the tests or the treatment--should it take place. So... ______I stand with all families who must deal with the burdensome costs of health care services that insurance companies simply do not cover. In so many cases, this debt takes years to pay off. Whatever you do, search your heart. If your heart tells you to make a donation to help The Gillespie's with the enormous costs to help Gunner move his mountain, donations can be made payable C/O The Gillespie Family at: Community Financial Services Bank (CFSB) PO Box 467 Benton, KY 42025 ____
When one Blogs about such a subject as I do here, they run the risk of incurring critics. "Oh, there he goes again--another issue to support". That's fine. As a trained actor, I learned to thrive on rejection and it literally rolls off my back "like water on a duck"! And yet, I look back to when I was 7 and 8 years of age. On at least 3 occasions, my life was spared by physicians. I nearly died! Today, many years later, you are stuck with me, my kooky humor, adventures and even misadventures. Thank God! Each day that I wake up is a gift! Therefore, why would I not want to acknowledge this gift of life by helping to raise awareness of a bright little boy who is fighting for HIS life as I did, albeit, under different circumstances? At a church I visited Sunday, I placed Gunner's name on the prayer list. A mother-to-be and her husband spoke with me and (of course) we wound up talking for 20 minutes about Sahara Aldridge. _____ When the real-life Frank Serpico (the police officer played by actor Al Pacino who took down a large section of a once-corrupt New York Police force) was on a talk show late one night, he talked about a fascinating event! He gave away all his possessions and traveled across the United States hitch-hiking and ultimately wound up in Greenland. Whomever he met--in cars, at bus terminals, or at trucker cafes, he posed this question: "What is the the meaning of life to you?" Ultimately, after a nearly 2 year sojourn, Serpico had his answer: "It is to love and help one another. That's it. It's that simple". So, if you came here today hoping to find something different, YOU HAVE! Hey, let's see what we can do to help this family. I'll keep you updated. All prayers, shout-outs, good vibes, meditations, positive thoughts and energy that is loving and peaceful is welcomed for this family. _____ HAVE A GREAT MONDAY, EVERYONE! Sunday, May 11, 2008A SUNDAY MUSICAL TREAT!
As with Gordon Lightfoot, I've seen Kris Kristofferson in disparate concert venue settings as Cincinnati's Music Hall, in Texas at a dinner theater twice and later a small bar (twice). Unlike Gordon, who often drives his own rental car to a concert, when I saw Kris, he was using a leased tour bus whose upper-front lighted signage read "NOBODY YOU'D KNOW". In this film, we have the beautiful Lorrie Morgan quietly sitting behind Kris but not offering backing vocals. But I digress...Hey, see how many legends on stage you can identify in the first You Tube. With Kristofferson, it's all about how a song is constructed. And his interpretations are great. ________ Saturday, May 10, 2008THE BOOK I READ WHILE I AWAIT MY DESK!
![]() Ron Wood of The Rolling Stones! _____ Knowing that each of you just "burn with desire" (Come on, admit it!) to know what I must be reading (:D) I thought I'd give you a short post "With a Nod and a Wink"----yes, to coin a phrase from a Faces CD. But you know, it's odd when I stop and consider just how long I've listened to Rod Stewart and his kick-ass backup band without realizing "Woodie" was such a big part of that. This is his bio, of course. So, first I suppose it's best to set the record straight, that Ron became part of The Rolling Stones in 1974 and not 1975. Mick Jagger actually called him earlier after querying a friend. "Do you think Ronnie would be interested in playing with The Stones?" A missed phone call! _________ This is a breezy conversational style book about the many lean (and I do mean "lean") years trying to sleep atop a pillow which itself, was stacked atop a stack of Fender Amps in a crowded van with the guys passing the worst farts and so forth. Eww! I suppose this is what they mean by "A captive audience", for sure. The Stones in "Shine A Light" have clearly returned to Fender, and amusingly--not to stir any one's ire--they use Mesa Boogie cabinets as mere platforms to stack and patch together Fender Twin Reverbs. But I digress, as always... __________ The bottom line is that this so called "new boy" (who replaced a less than content, but very competent Mick Taylor, who filled in for the late Brian Jones) has been a member of the group now for more than 30 years! Yes, Scary, isn't it? He has performed with the likes of Eric Clapton and almost became a part of Led Zeppelin. By the way, for those of you facing, or know someone else who is about to lose their house (due to idiot Realtors and Banks here in the USA), Ronnie lost his home after he became well known and handsomely paid. Beyond his knack for artwork, It is really quite amazing to read how tightly-knit he and band mate Keith Richards are. They have been there for each other through drug abuse and marriages. Wood was actually part of an intervention team in Richard's life, with the exception of cigarettes. Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Who and many others are to Wood just ordinary friends despite such cult followings. My favorite story was his visit to Jim Marshall's store where he ordered a stack of Marshall cabinets, and in walks Pete Townsend of The Who who spots Wood and realizes he has beat him to the idea of stacking big speaker cabinets in the 1970's and merely says "Bastard". A bit of Bwa-ha-ha! Ah, yes. Sweet victory among peers, I guess. Very much like winning a card game with friendly camaraderie. This is really a down to earth guy who is quite the raconteur with cool stories of early rock and roll. He recounts awful rip offs from dubious managers (especially with the band, "The Birds"--no, not "The Byrds"--see how tangled this can get?) Ronnie finds some semblance of balance with marriage and parenthood. He is, in fact the most stable of The Stones who literally comes alive with any opportunity to play a live gig! You will love this book as either a musician or a Stones fan. As a matter of fact, if Saturday night is as boring as last week, I'll be at The IMAX Theatre to catch the Scorsese flick "Shine A Light" again. _________ Hey! I mean , face it. How many times have I mentioned Kate Hudson here? Right? Okay, now go read this and as The Raspberries song says: PLAY ON! ___ Post Script: My new Cool and Groovy desk and chair arrives on the 17th--God Willing! And it's being delivered, thank you! :D) Friday, May 09, 2008THE ASPCA NEEDS YOU NOW!

![]() "A temptingly tasteful comedy for adults who can count".
_____ Good Morning, All! Among the"firsts" since I launched "Friday Movie Suggestion Night" (on February 15, 2005, as I recall) we're about to do another. Namely, re-run a film for the 3rd time. Why? Well, for one thing, this has been one hell of a week in all of humanity for reasons that should be obvious by now to us all. Secondly. I featured Dudley Moore in a snippet from the movie "10" and wish to maintain some continuity. Lastly, while most of you will remember Dudley Moore for 1981's "Arthur", I remain firm in my conviction that he was given a far more brilliant role in the film that catapulted both he and Bo Derek (amazingly unknowns here in the United States in 1979) in the epic "10", ...and without apologies! _____ For newcomers, this is Blake Edwards' {"Breakfast at Tiffany's" (1961), "Days of Wine and Roses" (1962) and I'd be bereft without mentioning "The Pink Panther" and "A Shot in the Dark" (1964) among scores of Blake's lengthy tome of films up to the present day} hysterical story of an immensely successful 42 year old Hollywood songwriter, George Webber (Moore) who seemingly "has it all". As Moore's gay business partner and lyricist "Hugh"--played by the late Robert Webber--and his explanation to a then-38 year-old Julie Andrews about "male menopause", I strongly suspect that his message will resonate among the women who view this beach scene conversation sufficiently enough to cancel the TV program "Dr. Phil"! Either that, or I will be enlisted as a keynote speaker to untold Women's Club Luncheons and various soiree's! Long remembered for the sheer physical comedy and slapstick that later made "Arthur" a successful movie, Moore takes the audience along on a wild and unpredictable journey through a severe mid-life crisis, and an unbearable angst about his mortality. Moore is seated in his Roll Royce at a Los Angeles stop light, when he casually glances over at a beautiful young girl dressed in a wedding dress and sitting in her her limousine on the way to the church and he sees "a vision", if not his salvation from his agony in "Jennifer"--ah yes, the breathtaking Bo Derek. The ensuing slap stick that Edwards employs in this film has never been matched to date. From the ensuing automobile accident, an agreement with a neighbor across the Malibu hills to have their telescopes pointed at each other's houses for carnal pleasure, and a performance by veteran stage and screen actor Max Showalter as a minister Moore visits (in a veiled attempt---pardon the wording--to discover where the Newlyweds took their Honeymoon). This film is so funny, you may suffer a hernia from uncontrollable laughter. Showalter tries convincing George that he is a songwriter too as Moore (struggles to maintain his composure--one scene among many worth the price of Admission), and the "MOST COMICAL BEDROOM ARGUMENT SCENE" ever filmed in the history of Cinema with Moore and Andrews (NOT TO BE MISSED) sparring over the definition of the word "Broad". These gems will outlive us all. However, before I unleash too many "spoilers", allow me to say that the moments of genuine warmth in this movie (as witnessed by my dedication to dear Kayla with my You Tube posting a few days ago), provide a respite from the endless charades, comical entanglements, drinking and Bwa-ha-ha to provide subtext to a man who is temporarily lost and desperate. Dee Wallace and then-newcomer Brian Dennehy (as a Bartender who carefully plays his cards close to the vest) turn in wonderful performances, and Julie Andrews couldn't be lovelier or sexier as Georges' long-suffering singer/actress Samantha Taylor. Moreover...THERE IS SO MUCH GREAT DIALOGUE IN THIS MOVIE! _____ During a heart-wrenching week whereupon we learned all too well the fragile nature of life and the meaning of True Love, Loyalty, Forgiveness and Passion I simply felt compelled to offer up this fantastic film to each of you as my Gift of Life! Indeed, it is how I have and will always remember Dudley Moore who expressed during the second to the last of his interviews just before his untimely death, "At least we got '10' and 'Arthur' made". Believe it, my dear friends! _____ Starring: Dudley Moore as George Webber; Julie Andrews is Samantha Taylor; Robert Webber is Hugh; Bo Derick is Jennifer (Miles) Hanley; Dee Wallace is Mary Lewis; Brian Dennehy is Donald the Bartender; Max Showalter is the Reverend; James Noble is the Dentist, Dr. Miles; John Hancock is Moore's Psychiatrist; Lorry Goldman is Bernie Kaufman; Rad Daly is Josh Taylor; The Uncredited Party Guests (believe it or not) include porn stars Annette Haven, Serena, Dorothy LeMay, Constance Money and Candida Royalle (yeah, get a load of those names...:D). Oh, Denise Crosby from the late John Ritter's film of the same year, "Skin Deep" (also a Blake Edwards film) shall we say---rounds out this cast. Written and Directed by the incredible Blake Edwards. NOMINATED at the 1980 Academy Awards for "BEST MUSIC/ORIGINAL SCORE": Henri Mancini; LYRICS BY: Robert Wells. _____ Laughter is truly God's gift to each of us. And this is a film that is timely for all of the right reasons. I have taken note of all of the e-mailers who have suggested films and no, you have NOT been forgotten. Stay tuned and prepare to forget your worries as you watch this one! ___ for Dudley Moore Wednesday, May 07, 2008A BIT GREEN TODAY!
Nancy Wilson of Heart(who is "hot") _____ This is just one of those rare posts where exhaustion has been my shadow, and I'm just too zapped to Blog the Great Fandango! My thanks to the movers (morons) who were transporting a teak wood Holland desk that I deemed simply too big for my flat. And after a wrenching 45 minutes, the exhausted men with cuts and abrasions after navigating three flights of stairs managed to accidentally break the desk into three pieces. They ended up "Unloading" what was left of the creation into the dumpster. My plan was to consign it and go with a smaller, albeit, a more functional desk. You may ask "Was it painful to witness this funky outcome up close and personal?" You bet! Some of this may be attributed, I suspect, to the fact that I was the lead moron! However, not all was lost. I borrowed one nifty strategy from the guys who actually moved me here last December. I wrapped an entire roll of Saran Wrap around said desk and upright two-wheeler. That part worked. And my humor (and humility) is still intact! With this in mind, I hope to write to you from my new desk by weeks end! One hand claps abound...I know, I know! :D)) Tuesday, May 06, 2008HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, MIKE WALLACE!
A slightly belated "Happy Birthday!" to one of my all time favorite broadcast journalists who is an unbelievable 90 years young!! _____ I must say that Mile has the uncanny ability to balance a tough interviewing job with empathy. His biography is riveting, and when you consider that he has interviewed the likes of: Eleanor Roosevelt, Malcolm X, President Nixon, Henry Kissinger, John Nash--the mentally ill genius on whose life the controversial Academy Award-winning film "A Beautiful Mind" was based, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, Gerald Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Deng Xiaoping, Manuel Noriega, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Menachem Begin, Anwar el-Sadat, Yasir Arafat, the Shah of Iran, King Hussein, Hafez Assad, Muammar Qaddafi, Kurt Waldheim, H. R. Haldeman, Vladimir Horowitz, Itzhak Perlman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Leonard Bernstein, and Johnny Carson among many others._____ Mike, Lesley Stahl is easier on the eyes for me (yes, she's still hot) as I'm sure you'll understand. But when it comes to broadcasting excellence, you are simply "the Best in the business". Happy Birthday, Mike Wallace! MANY, MANY MORE! ![]() Lesley Stahl (who is still hot) ____ A Post Script: Yes, um...just to clarify for those who may not be familiar with Mike's colleague. I'm sure Lesley has already beat me to wish Mike a "Happy Birthday", since I was two days or so off. But then several people have tried to consider me as "Off"--unsuccessfully, of course. :D) Monday, May 05, 2008ONE OF MY FAVORITE MEMORIES FROM FILM...
To belabor the obvious, I struggled valiantly to somehow start this week with an appropriate post for this morning. I hope you all agree that I made a suitable choice that captures all that we yearn for in our personal dreams to the fulfillment of life. The Academy Award for Best Song of 1979 here, "It's Easy to Say", was written by Henry Mancini with Lyrics by Robert Wells and performed by Dudley Moore from my personal favorite among his movies, "10". (This is the musical version without lyrics). Best to all of you for the week.
And my special thoughts go out once more, to Susan of "A Thousand Wordsworth" as we keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers and remember dear Kayla. That's all I have for today. My Sincere Best, Michael Sunday, May 04, 2008IN MEMORIAM: KAYLA MARIE ST. CYR
![]() Kayla Marie St.Cyr August 7, 1990 - May 2, 2008 _____ Last night, I learned from Blog-bud Walker that Kayla Marie St. Cyr earned her wings Friday afternoon at 4:40 PM after a valiant battle with cancer. Please, I know this may be difficult. But do stop by and leave a note of Love, Unconditional Acceptance and Peace to Susan at: http://thousandwordsworthy.blogspot.com. God Bless You, Kayla. Saturday, May 03, 2008MY FAVORITE MALE SONGWRITER!
My two favorite male songwriters have always been Gordon Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson. I had the Joy of meeting Gordon during my Freshman year of college when he came to perform on our campus. I have viewed this You Tube several times and this appears to have been filmed just last year in Gordon's native Canada. The "1970" reference is a bit confusing; that was the year Gordon achieved his commercial breakthrough. "If You Could Read My Mind" was also released that year. I have seen him in concert 6 times and though I remember Gordon from how he looked in the 1980's, I'm very happy he has recovered his health and is back out on the road. This is an exceptionally well written song--among the best I've ever heard in my life. Thank you, Andy Martello for teaching me how to post this! Andy is awesome (go visit his website on my Blogroll).
Enjoy your Saturday! Friday, May 02, 2008IT'S MAFIA MUSIC 25 FRIDAY!

(talking loudly toward my apartment door): "Guido!, Jilly! Stand by the door and don't let no one in until I finish writing this BLOG. Capeesh? Okay." I have assembled some Mafia songs that Vito Corleone and his son Michael would approve. Just don't ask questions. Okay?
HEY, PAISAN! HAVE A GOOD WEEKEND! Thursday, May 01, 2008"FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT" PRESENTS: QUIZ SHOW!
![]() Now comes a film from the gifted Actor and Director Robert Redford that is so timely it hurts. The subject involves the true life scandal of the late 1950's NBC Television game show, "Twenty One". _____ In a fascinating adaptation of Congressional Investigator Dick Goodwin's book, Remembering America, this movie chronicles the corruption and the lengths to which public deception was employed involving the the game show "Twenty One". The reigning champion who answers all of the questions correctly--according to vitamin company sponsor Geritol--is otherwise dull and unexciting. In the film, Geritol pushes network president Bob Kintner (Allan Rich) to pressure producers Dan Enbright (David Paymer) and Albert Freedman (Hank Azaria) with an edict to get rid of Stempel, a Queens, New York resident and an ex-GI. The producers do so by luring Stempel into taking a fall to allow a new contestant, Columbia College Professor Charles Van Doren to replace him as a contestant. This was conveniently accomplished by paying off Stempel and promising him a panelist gig on a future television show that never materializes. Both Stempel and Van Doren have actually been "coached" by Twenty One's Producers. They similarly enlist Van Doren to become a liar by telling him that he would actually be advancing the cause of literacy in America by allowing them to supply him with answers to questions posed before millions of Americans watching by television, thereby providing an invaluable public a service. When Stempel's payoff money runs out and he realizes with utter humiliation that NBC has no intention of recruiting him for the phony new game show, he becomes a federal whistle blower and this action triggers Congressional investigator Richard Goodwin to look into the practices of the show, its producers and more. Mira Sorvino plays Goodwin's wife, Sandra. Watch for a brief appearance by Calista Flockhart! _____ Redford deftly avoids preaching about the lack of morality while focusing more on the public deception and our unconditional acceptance that what we are being fed by the network was legitimate in all aspects. The film also closely chronicles the private anguish of the contestants and the price they pay for becoming patsies in a bid to increase ratings. In real life, game show host Jack Barry was nearly ruined by the sting. The nagging conscience of the participating contestants is palpable and the tension of the ensuing investigation results in a high impact drama.I'm still at a complete loss here to explain why audiences failed to show up at this movie? It was re-released, presumably on the assumption that it was considered "too deep" by the public, who in turn stayed away. While the jury is still out on that presumption, allow me to tell you a bit about this incredible film and cast. _____ Goodwin's investigation leads him to assume that the scandal goes to the very top of NBC's executive offices. The over-reaching producers simply see themselves as "controlling the responses" to make the show more dramatic. However, one would be hard pressed to believe that this unethical act and the sheer amount of public deception never entered their minds! Yet the audience is left to assess the true nature and the ugliness of lying to the public. I must interject here that if there was one identifiable factor in every Redford movie either Acted or Directed (this one was Directed) it would be Intelligence in it's structure and Integrity at it's core. No matter what your convictions, I feel there is a consensus that we must revisit the role of Integrity in all of our actions before real and lasting change occurs in this country. We are left to reach out own conclusions. The entire nation was genuinely shocked and disappointed with tremendous misgivings about television as a new medium. It was one more coming to age example that swept our country like wild fire. Not to be missed: The scene where Stempel is told by a TV reporter that both The Today Show and NBC have fired him. _____ Incidentally, QUIZ SHOW was NOMINATED at the 1995 Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Paul Scofield), Best Director, (Robert Redford), Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay by Paul Attanasio. ____ The Cast is: Rob Morrow is Dick Goodwin; Barry Levinson is Dave Garroway; Hank Azaria as Albert Freeman; Johann Carlo as Toby Stempel; John Tuturro is Herb Stempel; Ralph Fiennes as Charles Van Doren; Christopher McDonald as Jack Barry; David Paymer as Dan Enright; Allan Rich as Robert Kintner; Paul Scofield as Mark Van Doren; Martin Scosese appears as Martin Rittenhome and Elizabeth Wilson is Dorothy Van Doren. Directed by Robert Redford; Written by: Richard N. Goodwin (book) and Paul Attanasio (Screenplay) . _____ BEWARE! (AND ENJOY!) |
