WEEKEND WRAPPING!

Hey, here's a GREAT Christmas Gift Idea: Deni Bonet's latest CD!
(What better way to avoid the crowds at Macy's? Info below...)

Yesterday, my guitar teacher and I discussed the mental block I was having over a music lesson that was giving me fits. We meet every other week. I've always loved the guitar, but I'm not immune to the frustration many guitar students experience after sitting for hours trying to figure out why a lesson isn't making sense. I explained that I tend to "give it a rest" after an hour, walk off to my kitchen and make some tea. He was running a few hours behind and we had to reschedule our lesson for later in the afternoon. A friend of mine in New Jersey phoned me to ask about an upcoming magazine article I'm writing, and basically I ran short on time to change my guitar strings. Fortunately, my teacher had no other students, so he showed me a new technique for locking in a set of fresh strings at the posts. Ultimately, we resolved my mental block about the lesson in question. Part of this involved sampling a cut from Buddy Guy on his computer. Buddy has nothing to worry about yet; I have a long road to travel before I'm playing well, but it's been enjoyable so far.

I returned home and caught up with my mother by telephone. She was describing a minor car accident she had. Actually, another driver rear-ended her car at a red light. The driver was distracted by talking on her cell phone. Fortunately, my mother was not hurt. She got out of her car after the impact to exchange insurance information with the other driver in good faith. To my mother's astonishment, the other driver sped off! If my mother was younger, I have a feeling she would have commandeered a Hummer to pursue the "hit and run" driver as Gene Hackman did (commandeering a Pontiac LeMans) to pursue crooks in "The French Connection". Thankfully, she opted for driving home peacefully and making arrangements for her car to be taken to the body shop for a new rear bumper.

On that note, slide on over to Singer/Songwriter/Electric Violinist Deni Bonet's Blog (LAST GIRL ON EARTH). She wrote a song that is now featured on American Airlines domestic and international flights; she recently rocked out at CARNEGIE HALL, and she has a fun, new Holiday Song you can download on Itunes, "It's You and Me For Christmas".

Have a Great Week!

My little one just learned part of "Cat Scratch Fever" on her Fender. I kinda wish she'd have a little block...

YIKES about your mom's unfortunate hit & run event. I have been accused of driving like Steve McQueen, so I'd be getting on with the chase in a similar incident, I'm afraid. Your mom did the right thing.

I don't know Deni Bonet's music, but you've peaked my interest. I'm off to iTunes to see what I can uncover about her.

Have a great week!

Yeah, that's why I find it easier to write my own songs than actually sit down and learn how to play someone else's. :D

Also, I have that CD. It's great. Deni's great!

3 Magpies: A little Ted Nugent huh? Well, you;ll love Deni. She is an unusually warm and funny person with a heart. Her tongue-in cheek sensibilities are matched by a fierce and astonishing virtuosity as a musician who has either performed or recorded with Sarah McLachlan, REM, Robyn Hitchcock and many others. As for my Mom...I'm surpised no one has signed her to a TV series. I haven't decided yet if it would be humor or a uncovering mysteries! :D)

D-Man: Well, my teacher was using the Buddy Guy song to make a point about patterns on the Minor Pentatonic Scale. And I think it helped me to see my way clear to a solution.

Glad your mum took the safe option. She was lucky she wasnt hurt.

Michael, the best resource to understand those pentatonic scales is Fretboard Logic by Bill Edwards. I haven't seen a better explanation anyplace. Good luck and let me know if you need my help.

hot towel treatments and guitar lessons. it almost sounds like fun.
i'm glad your mother wasn't hurt.
music. what a great idea. even if the parking lot at the mall seems half empty this year.

Deni seems very interesting, though have never heard her music.

Michael, you're first up on Part One of the party.

I played the clarinet and thought the guitar would be easy, boy was I wrong. My fingers did not bend that way. Cheers for you learning, never stop. The hit and run rear ender happened a few time to my father, which I thing added to his alzheimers. Your Mom may feel fine now, but have her checked out anyway.

Wow, I am glad that your mom is okay. I always wonder if they are going to get around to banning cell phones here in Arizona. I have had many close calls due to distracted drivers on cell phones.

Casdok: Thank you for that nice comment. I'm very blessed with a Mom who is a very humorous person! She thinks getting older is "hilarious" by the week! There's always some funny observation from her about ordinary things we never stop and think about---and that keeps me howling! She is also a big advocate of seat belts and Thank God she uses them!!!

Hey Bud: Thanks, I appreciate that! I'll check it out and shoot you an e-mail!:)

Seraphine: You made me laugh! No, there's no pampering in PT, only work. Yes, on the Strat. My Mom is quite a character--no question. Deni's music is just incredible and her CD is always in my changer. Black Friday sounded nuts to me this year, and so I thought. "Wait a minute, order Deni's CD and rock out without having to leave your living room!" Just place a bow on it and "voila!" You have a great gift. :D)

Jean-Luc Picard: Oh, are you missing something! Go have a listen to Deni. I could write paragraphs about individual songs Deni has written and performed that will rock you, but you will have your own favorites too!

Of course, I will be cracking up at my party entrance piece over at your site! See You There!!! :D)

P M: That is a very thoughtful suggestion. I was saddened to hear about your father. I'll have Mom looked after--you bet. I've been slammed into three times at red lights. No fun.

Snoopmurph: Since we lead the nation in intersection collisions and fatalities in Phoenix, they certainly will. Law Enforcement is becoming more aggressive with the traffic cameras, so I'm reasonably confident they will go the extra step. :)

Hey Maria: TERASBETONI! If I were in Northern Spain you could score tickets and back stage passes to see the band, I know! Weather here is lower 80's and low 50's at night. Sorry to hear about the cold. But I'll be over to check out Northern Kings! lol! :)

I can't believe the driver just took off like that. Did your mother get their license plate? I'm glad she wasn't hurt...

At 12:56 AM, Blogger Michael Manning said...

Becky: No, Mom said the woman burned rubber and took off. I am sure she was upset. But she took it in stride and drove home. Plus I don't believe she carries Mace, so her main concern is getting her car back in shape with a shiny new rear bumper! :)
