MR. MANNING GOES TO PRESCOTT!
Good Morning: When I was a pre-teen, my best friend's mother dropped us off at a small movie theater in Ohio to see the new Sam Peckinpah film, "Junior Bonner" starring Steve McQueen. This was quite an unusual film for Sam, who had a well earned reputation as a director of violent films. In fact, he had just wrapped filming in England with Dustin Hoffman in "Straw Dogs" and was eager to soften his image. Filmed in 1971 in Prescott, Arizona and released the following year the Cast included Ida Lupino (in her first movie role since 1966) as the long-suffering wife of Ace Bonner (Robert Preston) and mother of two sons, Curly (Joe Don Baker) and J.R. Bonner (McQueen). Steve is cast wonderfully as a veteran rodeo rider at the end of his career who returns to his hometown of Prescott to participate in an annual rodeo competition and try to piece back together his dysfunctional brother and estranged parents. The film failed to find an audience at the time. However, beginning in 2000, the film has experienced a resurgence and captures McQueen as a hold-out, the last of a breed "going down his own road" pulling a horse and trailer across the country to rodeo events and putting off the inevitable end of his career. I just had to visit the Prescott, Arizona filming location for the bar scenes last Sunday. So, I did.
What I left behind in Scottsdale was 70 degree weather for an overcast sky and a hail storm in Prescott. As I am wanton to do, I struck up conversations with the locals and visited a Native American Art Gallery. Here I am outside "The Palace" where many of the movies scenes were filmed (including the phone booth where Steve made out with Barbara Leigh during the bar room brawl). I didn't see Barbara nor the phone booth. But locals were tickled about my Annual Steve McQueen Film Festival and they were genuinely nice to me. I bought a meal and a Lemon Drop Martini (to toast a very sweet friend of mine) and eventually left for home. I missed the train depot where J.R. tells Ace that he's flat broke--a painful scene McQueen plays so well (rent the DVD). That train depot is now a Pizza Parlor. I'll roll the film's opening sequence next time. It meant a lot to me to come here and just walk around by myself as a huge fan of McQueen. He was magic!
Cheers,
Michael

My parents stayed in Prescott a number of years ago, and when they paid the motel bill with a check the clerk had a hard time accepting that their name really was Prescott!
best blog EVER!!
big smiles reading it.
love the jacket.
orry you didn't see Barbara! Ha! Oh I suppose you're expecting me to add this to my list of movies I have to see huh? Well.... okay.
Great jacket and good post.
Have a great weekend
Love Jess
Some movies don't have box office appeal, but gradually get recognised years later.
I think with that jacket and a serious look you may have pulled off a Marlo Brando.
Its cool that you got to visit the location and experience the layout of the movie.
Oh and that expression on your face is one you would have in the nurse grabbed more than your camera HA HA HA
My, leave you alone for a day or two and you go off gallivanting in Western bars, LOL.
I do love the jacket, and woo hoo! that you can wear it again. ;o)
Have a great weekend, Michael.
Love and hugs,
Diane
p m: Now THAT is funny! :D)
girl rants: Thanks! Best Blog, huh? Very nice! :)
Martini: She is interesting and as kids, we loved her in te film! Still a beautiful lady too! Yes! I'd recommend it for your List of Movies. Very nicely done by Peckinpah!
Jess: Oh, that jacket! It kinda grows on ya! :D)
jean-luc picard: Steve was reportedly quite upset that it wasn't better marketed. But around 2000, it began to pick up steam and is very popular among movie buffs. The bar even offers the DVD's for sale. A nice movie about the past and the present coming together and McQueen plays it beautifully!
Walker: My mind is like a steel trap when it comes to many things. And that bar room has changed a lot. I couldn't find the phone booth where Steve corrals Barbara Leigh for a kiss. I believe it is now a coat closet. Brando! I cracked up. Me as Brando! Oh, Walker! :D)
Now, now Walker: I can assure you she was a very nice lady and very generous with her time to talk with me about Trevor--a very sweet person. It's pretty rare to speak with anyone who understands pediatric brain tumors but this girl zeroed in on what I said immediately and I was grateful to her for all she has been going through herself. ;)
Diane: Just stepping out of the shower in the morning is nice because I recognize myself from years ago. And that's a good feeling! :D
Looks like you enjoyed your time up in Prescott! I'll have to look for the Palace on our next visit too. We love taking the boys up to Prescott and walking through downtown. It's a great place to cool off in the summer too!
Snoopmurph: It's on Whiskey Row. I tried finding the old airline Ticket Office where McQueen buys Ace his First Class Ticket to Australia. But the shopkeeper of the ice cream shop said he was embarrassed that he didn't know more. He said he would check it out. I believe his shop was the spot. This movie was made a long time ago. It was fun and I should have ventured out back, but it was raining and then hailing. lol!!!
Thanks for the Movie Suggestion Michael.
To bad a lot of good movies are judged only on the box office.
Thanks again for the movie suggestion.
Glenn Bishop
Dude - you are just TOO cool! :)
Glenn: Yeah, I know. Sometimes movies take a while to catch up to people. :D)
Hey, Patti: I know a compliment when I hear one. lol to you! :)
Sounds like you had fun. 70 degrees sounds really good here in 30 degree world. Nice photos. Your posts about Trevor are wonderful.
Thanks Raven. To see this little boy in-person is such a Joy! :D) You would love him immediately! So much personality and humor!
