FUN PHOTO SHORTS AND A MCQUEEN BOOK!

Here is a photo of the 1903 Yellow Winton Flyer that Steve McQueen had custom built for our movie feature this week, The Reivers. Like the 1958 GMC pickup truck in the background, the car was sold during the second auction of Steve's Estate held in Los Angeles in 2006 at The Petersen Car Museum. The following McQueen cars are part of my 1/18 die cast automobile collection. It's an expensive hobby, guys and a good thing I concluded it. Here are some of the 45 I have:
The 1968 Highland Green Ford Mustang GT Fastback that Steve drove in the world's most famous car chase from the film, "Bullitt".
The 1968 Dodge Charger R/T driven by stunt driver Bill Hickman (with actor Paul Genge as the mafia hit man in the passenger seat). The rare 1/18 die cast model that I owned was donated to Cincinnati Children's Hospital's Ruth Lyons Children's Fund as part of my 16 car donation. I was a patient at Children's twice at ages 6 & 7 in the Intensive Care unit. Ruth Lyons, a pioneering television and radio broadcaster started the Fund in 1939. Here's how it worked. When a child was discharged, they were given a die cast model to take home with them. In 2005, I returned the favor with my 3 shopping bag donation. Do I recall my die cast vehicle upon discharge all that long ago? You bet I do! It was a shiny red Jeep pickup truck!
A very rare die cast collectible, I acquired this rarity last Winter from a Hungarian man in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He had one copy left in his storage facility, but 3 feet of ice and snow delayed his access to the facility for 7 weeks. It was likely the last one in the country, and I mean I scoured all 50 states for this gem. Steve collected so many speeding tickets with the real-life Jaguar XK-SS that he had his drivers license revoked twice! He was fond of speeding down Mulholland Drive into Encino at dusk. So, of course while in Los Angeles for a month in early 2007, I drove my rental car--an econo-box along the same route twice. FUN!
I can't fudge here. I own a rare Black 1983 Porsche 911 Cabriolet die cast. This, however, is immediately recognizable as the 1970 Porsche 911 that Steve had at home in California, while Porsche provided a similar car for the opening driving sequences through the countryside in the film, "LeMans".
Close but no cigar: I have a 1952 Hudson Hornet convertible. But Steve selected the lesser known Hudson Wasp that he and wife Barbara called their "Sunday church car" because, well, Steve drove it to church. I have to chuckle here, because Steve's son Chad mentions during the biography film of his father, "The Essence of Cool", that Steve in his last few years would get up at 6 AM and read the Bible. On Sunday's, he'd collect Chad and they'd drive off to church. During services, Steve would point out girls in the congregation he thought Chad should get to know, and then after services were over, the two would stop at Circle K to share a 6-pack of beer on the way home! One last point about photography...actually two. On my Blogroll, you'll find some excellent photographers. Carmi Levy at Written, Inc., is not only a fine photographer, but a very good writer who thoughtfully captures the essence of life with his lens. Fleur de Lisa is another gifted photographer who uses black & white photography to great effect to transport us to another place in time. But I'd like to close here with some exciting news.

Continuing good thoughts/healing vibes for Gunner!

Oh man, you know I get weak in the knees over muscle cars and I LOVE that Hudson Wasp! I think my grandfather had a Hudson Jet!

Morning, Bud: It's all guitar now! The collection wrapped up this past April. What I love is the designs because you can look at what passion say Raymond Loewy had in mind over at Studebaker, and of course John DeLorean had in mind with the DMC 12 that our fellow Blog Bud Martini owns!

Hey, D-Man: Yeah, I hear ya! One of the two cars was destroyed by the jumps over San Francisco hills. The second car exists in Tennessee but the owner will not permit anyone to view it. Steve tried to buy the car in 1974, but was unsuccessful.

Morning, Patti: If I were a Pharmacist, I'd write you a "script" for a 2008 Mustang GT "Bullitt". But I don't think Stacy would be very fond of me when you returned with a $60 gas bill! :D lol!!!

Morning, Green Tea: I have 7 Mustang's in my collection with a hub cap on my wall too. The only convertible I have would fit you well, but it's white with a black interior 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang. I can see you with your shades on cruising along Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood during the morning!!!:D) lol!!!

i giggled when you started talking about die cast cars, then realized you were serious! those are like hot wheels? i didn't realize there were people who seriously collected those.
sigh. maybe one day, my homies collection will fund a vacation in hawaii or something.

That looks a superb collection of cars!

Seraphine: No, this is a serious collectors hobby and not at all like Hot Wheels. We're talking Danbury Mint Automobile 1/18 mint reproductions that are quite expensive--$80-$120 a copy. Think executive desk top displays at GM, Ford and Chrysler and you have a better picture. Strangely, I was never a Hot Wheels kiddo. I built my own models with Testors cement and customized with body putty and paint. I love and appreciate a well designed car. McQueen was a vintage toy collector towards his last years, however it is my understanding that substantially all of his collection has been sold. lol! :D)

jean-luc-picard: Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld have the real cars wit a full time staff. And lest I forget, you technically have the USS Enterprise, Captain! Now THAT is Cool!!!:)

too bad about McQueen's toy collection. but i guess his toys are now owned by people who appreciate them. i imagine someone showing off a prized item and bragging, "this belonged to steve mcqueen."
i vaguely remember a danbury ad for a (delorean?) car whose doors opened like wings. maybe. i think i do.
your car reproductions must be beautiful. it must be fun finding rare one you've always wanted, like a treasure hunt.

Seraphine: That's true, even though that process is over and my main focus is music. Prior to Steve's cancer diagnosis, it is my understanding that he wanted to take a large truck and travel the country scouring antique shops with Bud Ekins. Bud is the stunt driver of the Mustang GT in "Bullitt" who handled those dangerous jumps down Chestnut Hill chasing Bill Hickman in the black Charger. Sadly, Steve's health deteriorated before he could complete this. But he was able to grow a beard and attend local sales and motorcycle swaps unrecognized and this gave him a measure of normalcy and privacy so he could enjoy events without being mobbed. If you go over to Martini's site at DMC and Me, you can see the beautiful Delorean. In fact, I wish you a DeLorean, Seraphine! You are so Cool!!!:)

Walker: On one condition: The helmet must come off (but you can keep the cape on) :D).

You know, Walker that 390 Ford Mustang GT could not keep up with Bill, so the crew tried "handicapping" the car with narrow tires---no good. But I agree with you about Mopar. So many nice cars in the past: Charger, Challenger, Dart, Barracuda fetching huge prices today! :)
