TAKE FIVE FOR "THE INTERVIEW"
As promised (and I always keep my promises) I thought that it would be fun to randomly think of just "5" personalities I'd like to feature on "THE INTERVIEW" and make a note explaining my choices. Of course, there are more people I'd love to interview! But let's start here and have some fun.
__
While in Chicago on a business trip, I waited to meet fellow blogger and Comedian Andy Martello at The Hard Rock Cafe. I had a salad and a drink at the bar. Immediately in front of me were three vertically stacked TV screens. Suddenly, live concert footage began to roll and I took note of an attractive lead singer playing a Fender Telecaster electric guitar. She was perspiring a bit and her eyeliner was a bit runny, but she caught my attention. There was only one problem. I couldn't come up with her name that afternoon to save my life! But wait. It gets worse! You know you're stressed when you similarly recognize but can't name the opening strains of the hit song "Back On The Chain Gang". Thankfully there were no psychics in the restaurant that afternoon or they would have heard me screaming my private thoughts: "C'mon, moron! THINK! You've seen this girl before! WHO IS SHE!" God, I felt pathetic. So, when the performance by The Pretenders ended, the bartender heard my confession and granted me the name of the girl who somehow made it out of Akron, Ohio (I know, can you believe it?) and eventually became famous after years of paying dues in bands in the U.S. and the U.K. So, you think I could come up with some interesting questions for Chrissie Hynde? Better believe it!As a kid, one of the coolest Moms on the street I grew up on in Cincinnati, Ohio (it's okay, I survived it) drove my best buddy and me to (the now defunct) Globe Records store where plain clothes police detectives regularly raided the place for allegedly selling drugs. All we knew as kids was that a lot of great looking "older girls" from the local high school walked in and curiously disappeared in the back of the store through the Black Light Poster Room. We each spent two-dollars on a huge poster of Raquel Welch. We're talking door length here, folks. Yes, Raquel was naked but her long hair covered up everything in that black and white poster. My mother was horrified when she discovered it taking up three fourths of the back of my bedroom door! I had to "get rid of it". So, I gave it to my oldest brother. Today, I'm still convinced I could go to the mat with Charlie Rose on a fascinating interview--or should I say "Fantastic Voyage" (start Googling). I've always been fascinated with this sex symbol of the 70's, 80's, 90's and Today. At least I could remember her name!
Paul Newman has been a Hero of mine for as long as I can remember. From the age of 6, I began a love affair with automobiles and like Paul, I later came to love watching car races on television. I challenge anyone to name a movie character Paul has created that wasn't just amazing in films ranging from "Cool Hand Luke" to "Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid" to "The Verdict" and "Nobody's Fool". I love Paul's commitment to children facing serious illness and I support his labor of love, "The Hole In The Wall Gang Camp" each year. Paul is as passionate about his open wheel car racing team in C.A.R.T. as he is in donating millions of dollars for more than two decades from sales of his grocery brand of Salad Dressings and Pasta Sauces under the "Newman's Own" brand label. When Larry King asked Paul what his first thoughts were upon seeing his wife and actress Joanne Woodward for the first time, Paul paused and said quietly, "I think I'd like to keep that one to myself. That's very personal to me". Class all the way!
Next March, McQueenonline will be linking to my Annual Blogsite feature "The Steve McQueen Film Festival". This is a labor of love for me and this year, 6,941 bloggers stopped by to check out my salute to "The King of Cool". While no interview is ever certain due to scheduling conflicts and more, I have a request in to Neile McQueen Toffel's agent to consider allowing me the privilege of welcoming Neile to "THE INTERVIEW" as my Special Guest. A family friend loaned me the VHS movie featuring Neile called "This Could Be The Night" and it tickled me. I just knew this lady had a sense of humor. But aside from being married to Steve McQueen, Neile today remains an amazing singer, dancer and sparkling personality whose own life story is captivating and unforgettable. I loved reading her book. She is a Classy Lady, so let's keep our finger's crossed!
My first recollection of seeing a Robert Redford film on the big screen was the movie "Jeremiah Johnson". His razor-sharp instincts are a trademark of every single film role he has accepted from "Barefoot in the Park" with Jane Fonda, to "All the President's Men" with Dustin Hoffman, his directorial turn in "Ordinary People" (with Mary Tyler Moore and Donald Sutherland), "Legal Eagles" with Debra Winger and "The Milagro Bean Field War". This dedicated environmentalist has no airs about his celebrity, and his Annual Sundance Film Festival continues to inspire and support the very best in Independent Film. We'd have much to talk about, I assure you!

Ciao for Now!

Hey Michael,
I would find it hard to ask these people questions - I most likely would sound like Jackie Gleason on the TV program the Honeymooners.
When his character Ralf Crandon was on the $20,000 dollar question and he was asked what he did for a living.
Ralf said " I bribe a duss I am a Duss briber."
Interviewing people and making it interesting is getting to be a lost art - that you do really well so please keep it up my friend.
Your blog is a great read!

Glenn: Thanks for that compliment! I find it exciting to engage a fascinating person with questions that allow others a window of opportunity to see into the soul of my Guests!
I certainly haven't interviewed anyone, (I worry my questions would be either too bizarre, or have been asked before) but I'v had a interesting conversations with people such as Claudia Wells (BTTF #1), Bob Gale (BTTF producer/writer) and Jeffrey weissman (BTTF II & III), some of which I'll be posting about this week.
What a good list! I hope you get to interview them all!
And if I may add Michael,
Your blog is also great because in the way that you do it - you bring people together in a positive way.
I have met some cool and interesting people through your blog and Andy Martello's blog.
I think that bringing people together in a positive way is a good thing.
That reflects very highly upon you and your integrity and character as an interviewer, a journalist and as the class act that you are. My sincere respect and congratulations on the anniversary of your blog. Keep up the great work.
Just my opinion.

Chrissie Hynde is a very talented singer!!!..I always enjoy listening to her ..

I have seen Jeremiah Johnson over 200 times. My ex bought me the dvd and I through it out then told her if i have the DVD I will never watch it again LOL
That and the last Star Fighter are the two movies i have watched the most and would probably watch for ever if they came on TV.
Raquel Welch was and is a hottie are remember my favorite movie with her was Kansas City Bomber, chicks on wheels ;)
I agree with you on Cool Hand Luke as one of my favorites with Paul newman, I think George Kennedy got an acadamy award for BSA.
I like Redford latest movies more than his earlier ones especially The Natural whch I bought a few months ago.
I bet you mouth is watering just at the though of interviewing your heros wife and I am willing to venture a bet that one day you will get your chance :)
That's an interesting list, esp. as I'm watching an AFI special that has been featuring Paul Newman and Robert Redford in some of their films. I don't know who my list of five would be if I really sat and thought about it but five off the top of my head would be: Katharine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, Cate Blanchett, Kate Winslet and maybe Meryl Streep.
What a terrific list! I loved Chrissie Hynde on Friends (yep,I am a Friends junkie and I loved the "Smelly Cat" duet with Phoebe). She has some terrific songs.
Raquel is gorgeous-not sure what her secret is, but I would love an ounce of whatever it is.
Paul Newman is definitely classy all the way and I love that he has a lasting Hollywood marriage.
If you get your interviews, you can bet we'll all be tuning in!
Martini: No problem. Send me a round-trip ticket to Canada and let me drive your DeLorean DMC 12 and I'll do a Morley Safer-style of interview with my cassette recorder running! I laugh at myself because when I took my cassette player out to interview Gordon Bethune in Houston last year, he said "Now there's a throwback to the 80's!"
Raven: lol! I never select anything easy, do I ? :D)
Glenn: Strange you should offer such a fine compliment on that very subject (My Sincere Thanks!). I was looking through a photo album that contained a picture of a very dear friend I lost a few years ago. Beneath her picture, I retained the last note that she wrote to me. She wrote that I had a way of bringing people together too. I cannot think of a nicer compliment. I hope that is the case. It's just simple and that's how I like to keep it all. I value your generous comments, Glenn!
Maria: I get the feeling that you approve of my short-list! :D lol!!!
Walker: Your secret about watching "Jeremiah Johnson" 200 times is safe with me. If your ex asks me, I'll disavow any knowledge of this blog post! :D)!!!!!
Becky: I like YOUR list too! :)
Snoopmurph: I am picturing you sitting next to me at that Chicago Hard Rock Cafe giggling while I suffer humiliation! Isn't that awful when this happens? I mean, CHRISSIE HYNDE! lol!!!! :D)
The trick to interviewing people like these would be to know every question that's ever been asked of them and find new ones. Or ask if they'd like to change any of their answers to some old ones.
Bud: Yeah, I agree. What I deliberately try to do is research the background of my Guests and ask open-ended questions as a way to really encourage dialogue on a given topic. I also like to create a setting that allows the person to feel very comfortable taking us wherever they want to go--hopefully with more of a reflective mood. I am working this week and weekend on an interview for the magazine with a true Legend.
In Utah, where Redford has Sundance Resorts and does his film festival, his environmentalism isn't always appreciated by the locals--he was once hung in effigy in one little town
Sage: Thanks for this note. It saddens me when a good cause turns violent by people who refuse to listen to another view and consider it. Then again, I have to remember the people who DID have a change of heart after they understood the point. Bob is very passionate about protecting the earth and I stand with him!
