HAPPY 90TH BIRTHDAY, MIKE WALLACE!

Mike Wallace
_____
A slightly belated "Happy Birthday!" to one of my all time favorite broadcast journalists who is an unbelievable 90 years young!!
_____
I must say that Mile has the uncanny ability to balance a tough interviewing job with empathy. His biography is riveting, and when you consider that he has interviewed the likes of: Eleanor Roosevelt, Malcolm X, President Nixon, Henry Kissinger, John Nash--the mentally ill genius on whose life the controversial Academy Award-winning film "A Beautiful Mind" was based, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, Gerald Ford, Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Deng Xiaoping, Manuel Noriega, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Menachem Begin, Anwar el-Sadat, Yasir Arafat, the Shah of Iran, King Hussein, Hafez Assad, Muammar Qaddafi, Kurt Waldheim, H. R. Haldeman, Vladimir Horowitz, Itzhak Perlman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Leonard Bernstein, and Johnny Carson among many others.
_____
Mike, Lesley Stahl is easier on the eyes for me (yes, she's still hot) as I'm sure you'll understand. But when it comes to broadcasting excellence, you are simply "the Best in the business". Happy Birthday, Mike Wallace! MANY, MANY MORE!

Lesley Stahl
(who is still hot)

A Post Script: Yes, um...just to clarify for those who may not be familiar with Mike's colleague. I'm sure Lesley has already beat me to wish Mike a "Happy Birthday", since I was two days or so off. But then several people have tried to consider me as "Off"--unsuccessfully, of course. :D)

Wow that is an impressive list of people Mike has interviewed. How I would have loved to be in his shoes!

Wow, he's 90 (but am I'm really 51?) A number of years ago I read Walter Cronkite's autobiography--it too was interesting to hear his take on all the people he'd interviewed. And Leslie, what can I say :)

Sage: I've read Lesley's book, as my thing is Biographies. Don't we have great tastes in women? I could go on but why embarrass anyone. Oh, BTW...

Good Morning Lesley!!! :D

I'm glad we (sometimes)revere
people for their experience
and age. When one thinks of
everything that has happened
in his lifetime, what he says
and believes has actual context
and perspective behind it. We
run around, twisting ourselves
over this and that, and here's
a guy who has seen it all before.
Happy Birthday Mr. Wallace.

I think he is one of the few broad caster that I have learned to trust.
Moany today are looking for the sensationalism ofa story rather than the people in the story, something Mike Wallace gives us.

I was inspired by his honesty about his struggles with depression.

What a remarkable man.
Some good genes there, he sure doesn't look like 90 years old..

So sad that today's journalists don't try to emulate this remarkable man.

I had no idea he was 90! He is truly a wonderful man and so impressive.

Seraphine: I couldn't have said it better!

Walker: THAT is exactly what finally killed it for me--the Cheap Sensationalism and poor business ethics--hell people don't even know that it's bad manners not to reply to follow up calls and correspondence. They can have it!

dianne: Yes, he actually did a "60 Minutes" piece on that! Integrity!!

Green Tea: I always get a chuckle at my memory of bumping into him at the airport in Dallas. He was on a pay phone obviously responding to a reaction from a source he interviewed and I overheard, "He said what? Oh, he's lying!" (Mike was amused).

p m: Katie Couric has the talent and background, but she's simply not translating well in her new role. Likability, Making an Unforgettable Emotional Impression with the audience, Being Trustworthy, and having the Background to support all of above is the "Litmus Test". Unlike Charles Gibson who always had News in his blood, Katie is best in the morning show role as a Co-Host. That's where she really connects. Not on "60 Minutes". They will yank her from the Evening News, but she will keep her $15 million. I wish Liz Vargas wasn't tied to ABC. She is the ultimate Female News Anchor.

fleur de lisa: I DO hope he doesn't stay away too much!:)
