FRAN DRESCHER-A GREAT LADY!
Hey, have you ever read about a wonderful story, even though it happened last year? I did. And it's worth sharing because most people probably do not know about this Congressional Bill that is so positive! So many women die needlessly from Ovarian Cancer, and speaking for myself as a man--I am shocked to read this year that the number of women taking advantage of free mammograms is statistically down. One of my favorite Actresses and Comedian's, the lovely and irrepressible Fran Drescher was behind this story and the Congressional Bill below!
_____
Here is what The Honorable Orin Hatch said: "I would like to acknowledge Ms. Fran Drescher who must deserve great credit for getting this legislation through the Congress. Her commitment to having this bill signed into law has been very impressive to me. Ms. Drescher has tirelessly visited with Members of Congress this entire week and will be staying in town until this legislation is passed by both Houses of Congress.
_____
While I have known Fran for many years, it was gratifying to be reminded of her tremendous enthusiasm and her commitment to women's health. Ms. Drescher is extremely articulate when she was advocating for Johanna's law. And that is because as a cancer survivor herself, she is strongly committed to educating women about awareness and early detection of gynecologic cancers.
_____
It was painful for me to hear her story. Over a period of two years, Ms. Drescher tried to get a diagnosis for her symptoms. She saw eight doctors before being told that she had uterine cancer. This should never happen. Ms. Drescher recognizes that women must know the early warning signs of all gynecologic cancers and which tests are available because women cannot assume that these tests will be offered to them.
_____
In addition, she is the author of the book 'Cancer Schmancer' which discusses how she beat uterine cancer. Her dedication and commitment have made a tremendous difference and we all greatly appreciate her efforts. Mr. President, both Ms. Warren and Ms. Drescher are truly amazing women who have shown a selfless dedication to making a difference in the lives of others.
I want a screening test to be developed so that it will be easier to diagnose gynecological cancers in the early stages of the disease. I am tired of women having limited health care options because of late stage diagnosis. This must change. But, I am hopeful that we can start to make a difference in the lives of all women the minute that this bill is signed into law. I urge my colleagues to support Johanna's Law."
___
HAVE A GREAT WEEK, ALL!

I love Fran Drescher too! I hope that law gets signed in.
I love it - cancer schmancer.
If I ever have to take chemo and lose my hair i'm getting a pink t-shirt with that printed on it!
Patti: The law was signed in last year!
I find it appauling that people have to basically force government to do something regarding heath, our health.
Their health is secire because they could afford to get proper health.
It's people like Fran Drescher who use ther celebrity to awaken the rest of us to what we don't know and need to know.
It' funny how we spend money on weopons of war under the guise of safety when the biggest enemey we have is here in the form of cancer and we sped a fraction of a percent on fighting that than we do on bombs.
It's like saving us from someone else's ideology to die from the obvious growing inside of us.
Thanks for waking us up to Fran's commitment to this cause.
i agree... it takes a 'someone' to get cancer looked at...gilda, lance, fran--
my little cancer goes undetected for years. the day i had surgery, one i pushed for, and was lucky enough to have doctors who listened to me because i knew my body, all of my tests were still showing normal...yet, the tumour was huge, malignant, and fully engulfed my thyroid.
another 6-9 months would have been too late, and the usual excellent chance of a long life would have been reduced to a year or so.
you have to fight doctors, insurance companies ("sorry, you've gone over your allotted blood draws!), you find yourself in debt...
this country needs to do SOMETHING about cancer.
and now.
and it shouldn't take a 'name' to make it happen.
I like the quote from Bird Man,
about living life.
The reminder to keep current
on exams and tests, and to
recognise the symptoms of
cancer is very important.
Thanks for Fran, and thanks
also to YOU, Michael Manning,
for keeping this alive.
Living life is a lot easier
when one are healthy.
umm... when one *is* healthy. LOL. Sorry for the grammar error in my previous post.
That is one thing I do believe celebs are good for when mixing into politics-- to bring attention to these things and get those kind of laws into action :)
A delightful picture of Fran, Michael.
It is a delightful picture LOL and she is an amazing, talented woman. I've admired her for a long time.
Great post Michael, thanks for once again shining light on important issues.
You just simply SHINE.
and I loved yesterday's post.
Happy Monday Michael.
Walker: I couldn't agree with you more! Gordon Bethune elaborated on the role of government during my February magazine interview, and I learned a lot from that visit. Basically, most politicians do nothing except focus on being re-elected. When they DO try and fix something, they more often make it worse. Government is sadly not the answer. But it should be! I have lost faith in the political fray!
quin: Good Lord! To have to fight the doctors. Makes one wonder why they even went to medical school. I am too naive. I always believed people pursued their passions. Not the dollar. While I personally am lucky to have the doctors I have, on whole, it is hard to find an empathic doctor who really cares for the patient. I wish you well and I'm glad you shared such a heart wrecnhing story! lol!
Seraphine: I loved that movie, albeit, Robert Stroud was apparently not quite the character Burt created. There was a lot of talk about the license Hollywood took with that story. I still love it!
Carolyn: In this regard, I have always admired Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell for being so open minded and balanced. They even went on O'Reilly's TV show after 9/11 and again later to discuss The Patriot Act. I admire them! And yes, I agree! Celebrity can be channeled into great causes! I like to focus on those who pursue this path!!! lol, Carolyn!
jean-luc-picard: Somehow I knew you'd appreciate it having seen the beautiful women who appear aboard the USS Enterprise over at your site! :D
dianne: YOU shine always too, my friend. Thank you for such kind words! :)
Thanks for the email Michael.
I adore Fran. I'm a big fan of her work and her book. I have become a member of ACSCAN, the Cancer Advocacy Network. We lobby our government officials to push back when they aren't getting the job done regarding medical issues. It is a young org, and there is a LONG WAY TO GO, but every bit of work helps. Consider clicking and joining! :D
Thanks for always being right out in front with this issue, Michael.
Such a great story Michael.
I'm glad you shared her message with everyone.
Just one of many stories out there.
I have lost friends and relatives to ovarian cancer, the silent killer!!
kinnickckick: Thanks for the cool news! I did not know about that!!
Green Tea: It's quite troubling. Fran was very lucky. I read her book and the doctors were just awful how they passed her off. Had she not started to do her homework, she might have perished.
My sister is in the final stages of Ovarian cancer. There is a book entitled Torch: Tales Of Remarkable Courage and Hope. She wrote one of the chapters. If only her condition had been found earlier.
Good post, Michael. Great to acknowledge Fran Drescher and at the same time raise awareness of something so important. Thanks.
p m: I am both shocked and saddened to learn of this. My heart goes out to you. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sister!
Raven: I've always liked her a lot. How could there be a rainy day with Fran? Am I right? :D
