A LEONARD NIMOY SUNDAY!

(Champion Air 1987-2008)

To my friends at Charter Airline, Champion Air (formerly MGM Grand Air): God Speed! This was the last all Boeing 727 operator in the United States and they were terrific. After a certain Vacation Packager withdrew their contract, that sealed their demise. The carrier shut down and will be liquidating. Champion Air says it has enough cash on hand to pay off all creditors. In defense of another fine airline, Frontier Airlines, who filed Chapter 11 this week after a certain credit card processor began withholding funds: to paraphrase (and embellish) the late Strother Martin from the film Cool Hand Luke: 'The credit card processor asked for it, and they got what they asked for'. The Chapter 11 filing was the only way for Frontier to get the credit card processing company to knock off that kind of malfeasance. The airline is still flying and will consider suing the card processor. I was so annoyed that the credit card processor company would siphon off receivables from services already rendered to passengers. My own understanding is that they have no legal right to use these strong-arm tactics. But I wish Frontier well! They have a hell of a good quality product. New subject...

Seraphine, Angie Ledbetter and Kathryn Magendie are all very cool! So they inspired me to share a cool poem by Leonard Nimoy. Well, they did so indirectly without knowing it, okay? There. Now, I'm at peace with myself. Here it is Ladies and Gentleman:

Leonard Nimoy

_____

Rocket ships

Are exciting

But so are roses

On a birthday

Computers are exciting

But so is a sunset

And logic

Will never replace

Love

Sometimes I wonder

Where I belong

In the future

Or

In the past

I guess I'm just

An old-fashioned

Spaceman

---Leonard Nimoy

(from his book, "Warmed by Love")

P.S. Janet at "The Art of Getting By" asks what your favorite quote(s) are: I answered that I borrowed one from Deni Bonet at "Last Girl on Earth" from the liner notes of her CD "Bigger is Always Better".

I am not sure if I like the poem or not...that is my initial reaction to a lot of Nimoy's art.

I do like the line about logic and love. I also love the Leonard Nimoy photo that you used for this post.

I would love to be able to hear Mr. Nimoy give an art presentation someday. I follow some of his photography.

Michele sent me.

Credit card companies are legalized mafia - or that's my opinion. I hope Frontier Airlines takes them to court and whups 'em.

I like Leonard Nemoy's poem a lot. Thank you for sharing it.

My mom used to have (seriously) the Leonard Nimoy record and also a William Shatner record. I am almost positive on that.

I also liked the love and logic part. I'll have to check his other artwork out.

Happy Sunday, Michael!

The Bluest Butterfly: Michele's very cool! I'm glad you stopped by. I am a fan of anything by Leonard. And you're right, he'd make a fascinator speaker of his art! :)

jean-luc-picard: I will toast you this morning with my coffee to the East! There's nothing like seeing Deanna and all those babes on board The Enterprise!

Raven: This was not handled properly and the credit card people should have met with the company first. Had they not filed Chapter 11 (which allows them to operate with federal protection against this creditor and others)the company would have been destroyed. Unlike the arrogance that has been in existence at certain of the Big Players for decades, this is not the case with Frontier. They have many unusual challenges operating out of Denver. Loenard is my kind of poet. He keeps it simple. His book is wonderful. A true Renaissance Man! :)

Snoopmurph: I devoted an entire Blog last year to all of Leonards' Vinyl CD's. I like anyone who can laugh at themselves like me! :D))

Interesting take on the credit card company... I've always paid for airline tickets (and any prepaid expenses like hotels) via credit cards because you have recouse if the company goes bankrupt and stops flying or providing their services... I was burned once by a tour operator--I had plenty of time and sent a check and they went bankrupt...

p m: He writes with simplicity and clarity, which I admire.

Kat: Mwah! :)

Angie: No pointed ears on this effort. Just from the heart! Good ole writing.

dianne: Yes, he's a favorite of mine who has journeyed from the stage to numerous projects from Hosting and producing and in film from Spock on "Star Trek" to a soldier in "A Woman named Golda". What a well lived life! Extraordinary!!!

Sage: I do the same. What burned me up was that Frontier provided flight services to customers. The credit card processor collected those funds and since the American commercial aviation industry traditionally operates with a "Negative Working Capital" (a deficit outlined in each and every Annual Report), the processor was out of line. But just to be clear, I too make my purchases as you do and for the same reason. What I was addressing was the commercial side of the credit card processor. They could have handled this better. Frontier's debt to credit ratio is admittedly razor thin, but it IS in "the black" and rates higher than airlines 10 times it's size. Passengers enjoy flying Frontier and this was simply a low-blow.

Very cool poem.

How can a credit card company do that? Their merchant agreements and fees tick me off and even more so when vendors try to pass along those charges to the consumer.

Katie: I think a court may decide this. Sorry I've been unable to access your site so often to comment. You Rock! Have a nice week! :)

Hi Michael. I've been watching the recent news from the aviation industry with increasing consternation. I worry that we haven't see the last of struggling and/or failing airlines. Some, admittedly, deserve their fate. The demise of others will be sad indeed.

I've got to admit, I've always loved the tail art on Frontier's aircraft.

Carmi: You are so right. This is just the beginning of a very nasty decompression.
