LOVE WITH THE PROPER STRANGER!
___________
Angie Rossini (Natalie Wood) hails from a heavy-handed Italian Catholic family where she is shadowed by her overly protective brother, Dominick. Rocky Pampasano (Steve McQueen) is a cool trumpet player who has a one-night stand with Angie. What she calls a "stupid experiment" worsens when she finds herself pregnant. Edie Adams is Rocky's sleazy girlfriend with too many dogs and winds up stealing away the few scenes that she's in. When Angie informs Rocky that "I'm going to have a baby", McQueen plays the role straight and ignorant with a blank facial expression as he replies, "Congratulations," as if he were on another planet! Reality sinks in when Angie tells him: "Don't worry, I'm not going to cause you any trouble. I just want you to find me a doctor -- an address, you know?" Here are two completely different characters and they are quite a contrast in what makes their lives tick. They are rather lost, but joined by this new fate. But McQueen's character is vulnerable and unlike future roles, his steely resolve wavers until he sees something in Angie and wants to make a mid-course correction by proposing to her. When she refuses his offer of marriage on the basis of not being in love, their dysfunctional friends and family members go nuts and the picture becomes both funny and moving!
_____
Look for "Happy Day's" Tom Bosley makes his screen debut as well as a possible suitor for Angie who gets nowhere. Recognizing he must do something to win her heart, Rocky resorts to some hilarious strategies outside Macy's department store where Angie works. The dialogue here is rich and this is an early effort by Producer Alan J. Pakula. The tension between the independently-driven Angie and Rocky is amazing as he must fight for and eventually earn her trust and love. It is here where McQueen is cast in such a unique role that brings the best out of both actors.

for Natalie Wood

You never forget the one scene (I don't want to spoil it)
I loved Natalie Wood as a kid and she is absolutely gorgeous. I always loved that she was a brunette and not a blonde (I felt the same way when the Princess Leia doll came out-empowerment to the brunette for some reason!) Anyway, I haven't seen this one and I will need to check it out ASAP.
P/S-I stopped at Barnes and Noble tonight and spied the McQueen DVD's...excellent recommendation! Thank you!!
Looks intriguing! I always liked Natalie Wood as well, and her daughter reminds me a lot of her, Katie I think?
p m: I'm with you, man! :D
Snoopmurph: There are currently 2 volumes. Try the one with "Bullitt" for your hubby. He will never stop thanking you!
jlee: YOU look like a movie star!
Natalie just melted my heart in this movie. One of many that I truly miss. Without sounding maudlin, I was lucky to visit the resting places of so many stars while I was in L.A. Natalie is unforgettable!
Always thought Natalie had the most haunting eyes....
So sorry to hear about your friend Dariana...
Patti: I don;t know Dariana, but jean-luc-picard does and when he told me about this, I felt I had to spring into action. She seems like a lovely girl and very young. I'm always affected when I read that a good person is hit with this. I hope you visit her site and just leave a kind word of encouragement. Words are powerful to the heart. :)
i always wanted to be nat wood... *sigh*
I don't remember the movie. But if it's half as good as you make it seem, i'll love it. That's just the kind of movie I like watching.
I've seen pics of Natalie Wood, but I don't remember seeing her in a movie.
Quin: I would have married her. Trouble is I was only a tot when she first hit Hollywood! A lovely girl.
Seraphine: She was married to Robert Wagner who remarried and his current wife is Jill St. John. You may want to Google Natalie's many movies. I'll bet you have seen one of them! I'll hop by (excuse me, Easter is over..I stop by your place). :D
Thanks for highlighting Dariana as I did. I notice from her comments that she has had some from visitors to the both of us.
These are favorites from my youth,
Natalie and I were about the same age..so naturally my friends and I would identify with her in every movie.
It was so sad the day she died..
I love these old movies..
this was a wonderful movie! so many great scenes - when she cooks him dinner, when they all meet up with her family in the park, in Herald Square - not to mention the darker scenes that shed light on an archaic time in women's history.
I've seen this movie no less than a dozen times. Natalie was a gem.
I'm off to visit Dariana.
jean-luc-picard: I have you to thank for making me aware of this serious crisis, my friend. Let's all pull together to help Dariana rally!
Green Tea: For years on this blog site, I jokingly mention women I could fall in love with and I carry on at hilarious length about it all in good fun. For example: "How unfortunate it is that I woke up this morning, and Kate Hudson was nowhere to be found!", etc. But if I were to make a serious Top 10 List of absolutely stunning and fascinating women I would wish to have a dream date with, Natalie would be on my personal list. I also mourn that she is no longer with us, I assure you!
dianne: I love your comments, as always.
But in particular I'm elated that you choose to visit Dariana. I came across her website after our mutual Blog Bud jean-luc-picard mentioned the emergency on his site. When I visited Dariana's site, I comprehended the gravity of her circumstances and simply felt that were I facing this challenge, I would hope that people who cared for me would respond with a line or two of supportiveness. :)
I am enjoying this list of movies and I'm going to have to set aside some time very soon to rent these movies. It's been a while since we've rented something good. I'm tired of wasting $5 every time we rent something. But I guess it's hard to go wrong with Mr. McQueen.
I love Natalie Wood. I remember wathing Westside Story with my mom whenever it was on TV. Thanks for the recommendation. I enjoy learning about screen gems from you that I know nothing about.
Martini: You're right. McQueen delivers the goods! :)
Teresa: I am always amazed at the 20 and 30-somethings who are discovering Steve's work year after year. This is a fine testimony to Steve's amazing talent and the fact that time means nothing to his films. Their quality is always "Cool". There is only one McQueen--and he epitomizes for so many of we guys what the nuance of "Cool" really is!
