FRIDAY MOVIE SUGGESTION NIGHT PRESENTS: "MY COUSIN VINNY"!

You've Asked for Laughter...Voila!
_____

With February wrapping up, not coincidentally many of you remain "wrapped" in blankets on the couch holding out for better weather on weekends. You are fed up with the weather, politics and have forgotten what it is to laugh, right? Not to worry. I give you: "MY COUSIN VINNY"! No, he's not "my" personal cousin, but this film IS a riot! The blast begins when two friends named Bill Gambini (Ralph Machio) and Stanley Rothenstein (Mitchell Whitfield) from New York have just received scholarships to UCLA. They figure, 'What better way than to celebrate by a car trip through the south!' Yes, go figure! In Alabama, they stop at a local convenience store to pick up a few snacks, but wind up arrested for robbery and murder! Plus, they are facing execution for this crime with no money for legal representation. On the fly, Bill remembers that he has a lawyer in his cousin, Vincent LaGuardia Gambini (Joe Pesci) who is not exactly Robert Shapiro! Vincent LaGuardia Gambini (love the name? Wait until you see the wife) is a mess who has to fight for everything he does just to keep his life afloat. His loud-mouth hilarious wife is Mona Lisa Vito (Marisa Tomei) ! There are many New Yorker stereotypes here with Joe Pesci in a role tailor made for him. Interestingly, Robert De Niro and Danny Devitto were considered for the Gambini role. Courageously, Fred Gwynn makes his last appearance and was said to have been in tremendous pain from cancer. It was his last film role. As always here is The Cast: Joe Pesci is Vincent 'Vinny' Gambini; Ralph Macchio is William 'Billy' Gambini; Marisa Tomei is Mona Lisa Vito; Mitchell Whitfield is Stan Rothenstein; Fred Gwynne is unforgettable in his last film appearance as Judge Chamberlain Haller; and Austin Pendleton is John Gibbons. Directed by: Jonathan Lynn and Written by: Dale Launer. A 1993 Academy Award Winner for Marisa Tomei as Best Supporting Actress.

Good suggestion--I loved that movie (as a Southerner I was afraid that I wasn't going to like it--that it was another make fun of the South). The film makes fun of everyone and we all laughed hard and everything works out in the end

This was the film that launched Marissa Tomei into superstardom. I probably watched it 5 or 10 times already. Good choice, Michael.

Maria: You would enjoy my CD collection, and I know I would find yours great as well!! :D

Sage: The filming was actually done in Georgia where a steel warehouse was constructed for the "courthouse". It was 100 degrees inside as they filmed.

Seraphine: Hang around, because I have some selections ahead that no one has heard of but is all great stuff with many surprises!

Excellent suggestion. Great movie. Marisa Tomei well deserved the oscar for this performance. I was so glad Joe Pesci followed up Goodfellas by going into comedy. He's one of the funnies actors alive today.

Joe Pesci just cracks me up.

I've heard alot of controversy about Marisa's Oscar win for this one.

As sage said, this film made fun of everyone.

As a Brooklyn girl I loved Pesci saying "dah utes" over and over. And Gwynne asking over and over "ute?" - priceless.

And Pesci telling Tomei to reel it in and she just stamps her high heeled foot and says "yeah, and you blend"

Just a wonderful movie from start to finish.

Have you caught up on your rest yet?

Good pick Michael!

Are you all rested and ready for new adventure?

p m: I found it amusing that Joe brought along his 1990 Oscar onto the set in 1992! :)

Hi Patti! That's news to me, I'll have to check on it!

Dianne: All funny scenes. Not yet on the sleep!

Katie: I am not rested yet, but very happy that we posted my own videotaped interview on the REEL PAGE. It's nice because it is sectioned into 8 pieces so people can come and go as time allows. That, I am happy about. The sleep will be back to normal by Monday. It's quite amazing really how such dueling projects plus playing catch up plus follow-ups take so much time. But it's all done, thankfully! :)

One of my favorite movies! You are inspiring me to dig it out (I own it!) and watch again this weekend!

Thanks!

I absolutely love this movie. I think my favorite line is when he's worried about what pants he's going to wear hunting and she goes through that whole thing about "would you give a f*&( what kind of pants the son of a bitch that shot you was wearing?" I laugh every time I see that scene, no matter how many times.

Becky: Yeah, that IS hysterical. Of course, I love it when he shows up to court in a purple crushed velvet Tuxedo because The Judge told him to come back wearing a suit and this was all he had in his closet at home! :D))
