HERE'S TO YOU MRS. ROBINSON!

Last year, we featured "The Graduate" on "Friday Movie Suggestion Night" and it remains one of my Top 5 Favorite Films. Patricia Neal was offered the role of "Mrs. Robinson" initially, but had suffered a stroke. Then Doris Day and Jeane Moreau chose to pass. There can be little doubt that the late Anne Bancroft could have known in 1967 what a cultural icon this movie and the role she played would have on subsequent generations of movie fans 40 years later. The movie was Directed by Mike Nichols and adapted by a book written by Charles Webb. I managed to see Anne interviewed on "Inside the Actor's Studio" about her role, which often overshadowed so much of her work that followed. And it was fascinating to hear her personal input about the subtext she saw in the character she played. "The Graduate" is of course, a fascinating "coming of life" Drama/Comedy with it's impeccable casting, its images of Dustin Hoffman tooling around in his Red Alfa Romeo Spyder and the unforgettable Katherine Ross as "Elaine". Here is an interesting look at the actresses who in recent years have played "Mrs. Robinson" in the stage play of "The Graduate". I provide a YOU TUBE site at the bottom of this BLOG featuring Simon & Garfunkle's live performance of the song "Mrs. Robinson" at "A Concert in Central Park". Their original soundtrack was actually songs Mike Nichols "adapted" so perfectly to catch the mood of this film. At the time, no filmmaker had used existing music whole in this manner, even though some of Dave Grusin's music made the soundtrack CD. Each time I see this film, it stays with me for a few days. Recently, Dustin Hoffman was a Guest on "Larry King Live" and he showed Larry two stills from the movie. He said "You want to see something? Look." He pointed at the movie stills and noted that he was 30 years old at the time playing a 21 year old and Anne was 35 at the time playing a 40-something character. The late Anne Bancroft was a remarkable talent and she is missed.

hi michael, thanks for stopping by my blog. You are most welcome to add my blogs to your blogroll. Go for it!
I've been looking at your interviews blog, really interesting stuff. I'll have to come back when I have more time and print and read some more. I read the interview about animal cruelty which made me think about my previous next door neighbor who used to feed her elderly dog human paracetemol every day hoping that it would ease his pain. I thought this was very cruel since I'm fairly certain that human medication is no meant for dogs! Some people are a bit crazy.
If your looking for interview subjects I'd be happy to do an interview about my music. I'm also in a band called "The Wishing Well" we are launching an album soon. A couple of us could do an interview too. If you like. see www.myspace.com/thewishingwellband
Hello Michael! Stopping by to check on you....*smiling*
As always very entertaining and enlightening stuff from you Michael!
It's horrible living in an area where we don't have high caliber plays. Maybe with more movies and TV shows being made here that will change.
All the women pictured as playing Mrs. Robinson look perfect for the part. Morgan Fairchild to me stands out the most.
I didn't realize how many women had played Mrs. Robinson. For me it was and always will be Anne Bancroft.
I have the CD and DVD of the Concert in Central Park - it was a great concert. Now I have to go watch it and then, since I'm in the Central Park mood, I will have to watch the Diana Ross concert DVD.
Michael - you're killin' me! All this great stuff to re-watch and enjoy all over again. I must find more time LOL
Have a great weekend Michael
Rachael: Thanks for all the positive feedback. I so enjoyed seeing coverage of your story. You're so right about animal cruelty being unjust. ASPCA is really making a difference. I have some music interviews this year ahead. But, I'd like to consider you guys as well as I get caught up. Thanks again for the kind words!:)
Kat: I did stop by last week, but it's nice to see you here! :)
Patti: Mucho Thanks and hope you and Maddie have a good weekend!
p m: I noticed there were new studios being built next to the airport in Albuquerque. But stage wise I'm surprised!
Dianne: Glad you like the varied stuff here! I was still in Cincinnati when Linda Gray passed through with "The Graduate", but tickets were too expensive.:)
I remember this movie sticking with me for days as well. I'm going to have to put this in my queue for another viewing.
I love the thought that both Dustin and Anne were playing characters +/- 10 years older/younger.
Knitti-Me: The whole movie was magical, with the soundtrack, with Dustin Hoffman, Anne Bancroft, and Katherine Ross.It just "clicked" and boy, it still enjoyable to watch and relate to!
I loved that {original} movie! I could also see Kathleen Turner in the part, but I have a little trouble seeing the others. I guess I like the seasoned actresses, lol!
Carolyn: It's interesting to see that so many actresses bring their own unique and identifiable stamp to such a role many would bolt from in the wake of Anne's treatment. Very hard to follow!
I loved Anne Bancroft, but I could see Larraine Bracco in the role.
She is a sexy lady too.
Michael, you mean those legs we've drooled over for years weren't Anne Brancroft's but Linda Gray's? I'm disappointed!
Green Tea: I blogged last year about reading a story of a young guy who was approached by an older woman at a party. He asked her name and she whispered in his ear "Just called me Mrs. Robinson"! Haha! What if the kid never saw the movie?
Sage: Yes, it's true. That is Linda Gray's leg on all those posters. She was a model at the time and to this day this is mentioned on talk shows that she appears on! Linda is still a beautiful lady!!
