______
Last month, while I was relocating to Arizona, my friends at The Pan Am Historical Foundation presented a very special award to Sir Richard Branson. It reads as follows:
_______
"The CLIPPER HERITAGE AWARD is presented by The Pan Am Historical Foundation to honor a significant contribution to Humanity involving aviation and exemplifying the vision, innovation and adventure that was Pan American World Airways.
_______
To recognize his unique initiatives as an airline owner to meet the challenge of global warming and minimize the environmental impact of his businesses, the Pan Am Historical Foundation is proud to present the CLIPPER HERITAGE AWARD to:
SIR RICHARD BRANSON
Founder and Chairman,
Virgin Group Limited

_______

Sir Richard has committed profits from the transport companies (airlines and trains) of his Virgin Group, estimated at $3 billion over the next 10 years, to renewable energy initiatives to combat global warming.
_____
In addition, he has launched the Virgin Earth Challenge, offering a prize of $25 million for a commercially viable design which results in the net removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere each year for at least 10 years, so as to help stabilize the Earth's climate".

This man is something of a hero. For some reason, he also wants to buy our Northern Rock bank which has severe financial problems. Not bad for someone who left school with virtually no qualifications.

You know--when I first read title "clipper award" and saw the picture, the image of clippers (ie, barber clippers) came to mind... :)

Lisa B! Nice to see you here!! I tried to "borrow" another photo that was fun, but no luck!

Dianne: As I've mentioned a few times here, a colleague of mine at the magazine was interviewing Richard when an aide tapped him on the the shoulder to remind him they had to leave for the studios of "Larry King Live" for an appearance. Richard looked at my colleague and said. "Pity. I was really enjoying this conversation! Could you join us and then we could pick up where we left off over dinner?" Quite a night. I was told Sir Richard is a refreshing personality and a very generous person!

Anonymous: When the Time magazine issue of the "100 Greatest Titans of the Century" was issued, thankfully, Sir Richard authored the biography on Juan Trippe, the visionary founder of Pan Am, along with explaining Pan Am's importance to the development of the United States and of International air travel as we know it! I agree that he has an incredible business acumen!

Sage: Mr. Trippe can be credited with the tradition of naming each of the Pan Am aircraft with various exciting names, preceded by the word "Clipper" as commercial air navigation is similar to that of marine navigation with visions of Clipper Ships of old. Thus, "Clipper America", "Clipper Defiance", "Clipper New York", "Clipper Goodwill", (etc).
