10 BIG ONES!
>The Night that America Met The Beatles!
_______________________________________________
All right, here's just 10 songs that have something original about them:
- REM: "Shiny Happy People": Sheer genius to add The B-52's Kate Pierson on harmony.
- The Byrds: "Turn, Turn, Turn": That song never gets old with McGuinn's 12 String.
- The Doors: "Gloria": The Van Morrison Classic recorded during a Door's sound check.
- The Cowsills: "The Rain, The Park & Other Things" while inspiration for "The Partridge Family" TV series, this real life family band delivered a song that stays in your head.
- Simon & Garfunkle: "Scarborough Fair/Canticle": It's impossible for me not to see a brooding Dustin Hoffman driving past Elaines' (Katherine Ross) house in his red Alfa Romeo trying so hard to figure out how to make sense of it all in the movie, "The Graduate".
- The Beatles: "Let It Be": Billy Preston's infectious organ track and smiles helped lighten up a film about the tense, final days of the Fab Four.
- The Beatles: "Free As A Bird": Network Television in America actually had a stopwatch counting down the debut mix of John Lennon's highly inspired song and was a triumph from "The Boys"!
- James Brown: "Living in America": Six years after his cameo in the movie, "The Blues Brothers", "The Godfather of Soul" was back with this infectious anthem that had everyone reaching for the volume button!
- Janis Joplin: "Me and Bobby McGhee": She played the rhythm guitar track and everyone from Tiffany to Jewel has included it in their set list--including the man who wrote it, Kris Kristofferson!
- Sonny & Cher: "I Got You Babe": Sonny Bono penned it on an upright piano in their garage with a carpet role sitting on top. It's infectious as it swells to a conclusion and is incredibly optimistic!

Very good list Michael. There are one or two I don't know but the ones I do I really like and heartily agree with your assessment.
I love REMs Shiny Happy People... how can you not smile listening to it? I like the rest of the list, too... except the Cowsills, only because I don't think I've ever heard the song before!
I love Scarborough Fair, I would love to buy the clarinet music for this.
Patti_Cake: I'm glad you agree! :)
Restless Angel: Oldies Radio will occasionally play The Cowsills number. I saw them on a Vh1 "Behind the Music" some time ago too!
ellee: Wow, that's cool! I've never thought about that instrument!!
some of these groups are before my time :-) but the songs i know i really like so good choice.
I remember learning the words to Scarborough Fair/Canticle when I was a tiny kid because I had a very old book of poetry with the bits about the cambric shirt and the herbs. That's when I learned, too, that rosemary is for rememberance, but it did me no good, because I can't remember what parsley, sage, and thyme are for except making chicken taste pretty good.
sally in norfolk: Many are on "Oldies" format stations.
GW: It's a shame in one sense that I love "The Graduate" so much, because I can't seem to remember anything beyond Katherine Ross as a young "Elaine Robinson"! This was the first movie to have music available "off the shelf" before it was finished. That much I do recall! :)
Great list , as usual you have great taste ! take care .
Greeneyes
greeneyes: Thanks! Older tunes, Newer tunes--I love it all!
Such a great list of songs...
Cool. I was able to add a couple to my Check Out list.
bobby mcghee is one of my all-time FAVORITES!
Claire: Thank you!
D-Man: It's always cool to share music another friend may not have experienced!
Dawn: Mine too! I've seen Kris Kristofferson do it 4 times with his band and it's special hearing the actual writer sing it!
