DANICA PATRICK AT THE INDY 500!

Danica Patrick
_____________________________
The Indianapolis 500 was won by Danica Patrick and Michael Andretti's teammate, Dario Franchitti in an abbreviated Indy 500 Sunday, with Franchitti driving slowly to the checkered flag in a downpour. Third teammate Marco Andretti's battered car was towed away on a wrecker from an earlier mishap. But for the first time--ever--the race had three women drivers. Joining Danica Patrick was Sarah Fisher and Venezuela's Milka Duno, a Naval Engineer with four Master's degrees. Patrick said that when the number of women driving in the race increases to around ten, "that's almost a third of the field" and would be very significant. I think it's great to see these ladies--all excellent drivers--competing in what has been largely a male-dominated sport. I followed it more as a kid than I do today, but it's still exciting!

ALL: For those of you who missed this,I had blogged briefly about storms when Denny brought it to my attention that the storm photo was missing. Ultimately, I decided that Danica was far more intriguing than storms!

Denny: Somehow, I just knew you'd see my point! :)

It's a holiday and I haven't read the news yet, wow, a woman won at the brickyard! Congratulation. Like you, I kept up on racing more as a kid than as an adult

Okay, I needed to reread the first sentence. Although she led, it was her teammate that won--a teammate who is also the husband of Ashley Judd (isn't that like entertainment incest?)

I watched the race and do so almost every year. I have been an Indy car race fan since I was a kid.

This race was a great one this year. Lots of things happened including a rain delay.

Thanks for a great post Michael and I hope you have a great weekend.

Glenn: I understand debris on the course sliced up Franchitti's front tire and he timed a perfect pit stop. Danica has many years ahead of her. This was Milka's second race. I wonder if Paul Newman was watching!

Many Thanks Glenn!

Go Danica! Girl power *wink*

I'm more of a Nascar girl myself.

patti_cake: Paul Newman is I believe still with CART. He and the Indy folks truly like each other but Indy is all Hondas, and I think Paul is seeking some flexibility.

I know nothing about this sport but I think it's great to see a woman right up there in the ranks with the men!!!!

She certainly looks beautiful, Michael. I didn't watch the race this year but maybe I will next year just to see how the women place. Maybe it'll be Danica's year in 2008.

Christi: I've seen her interviewed and she is the epitome of "determination".

Utenzi: I noticed she was beautiful too (and married)!
