HUD!

____________________________

This past week, I noticed a news report on television stating that Paul Newman will be announcing his retirement from film. I am an enormous fan of this fine Actor, Humanitarian and Philanthropist and earlier this year, I saw his Guest appearance on "Larry King Live". This movie was singled out and discussed, so I selected it for "Friday Movie Suggestion Night". It is a very unique role for Paul Newman.

_____

Hud Bannon (Paul Newman) is a ruthless young man who leaves a swath of wreckage and alienation at every turn in his life without any remorse. The conflict of this movie arises between Hud and his stern, disciplined father, Homer (Melvyn Douglas). Hud's nephew Lonnie (Brandon De Wilde) initially admires Hud's cheating and callous ways, though he soon comes to a turning point in a drama that is unforgettable and thus, it leaves behind a powerful message. Directed by Martin Ritt, and Written by Larry McMurtry (from his novel "Horseman Pass By"), Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank Jr., The Cast includes: Paul Newman as Hud Bannon, Melvyn Douglas as Homer Bannon , Patricia Neal as Alma Brown and Brandon De Wilde as Lonnie Bannon. The film did extremely well at the Oscars. ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS: Paul Newman: Best Actor in a Leading Role; Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White: Hal Pereira, Tambi Larsen, Sam Comer and Robert R. Benton; Best Director:Martin Ritt; Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium: Irving Ravetch and Harriet Frank, Jr. ACADEMY AWARD WINNER: Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Melvyn Douglas; Best Actress in a Leading Role: Patricia Neal and Best Cinematography, Black-and-White: James Wong Howe.

I hope he won't be retiring from the stage. He's so enjoyable.

Also, he held the door at the post office for one of my friends once. She said she was so mesmerized by his blue eyes (although he was wearing glasses) that she went through the lines daydreaming about him and when she got to the front, she forgot to buy stamps, which was the main reason she was there.

GW: That is an enjoyable story! He is an extraordinary and generous man who has made such a positive difference in our world and I felt a tinge of sadness at this news on CNN. I realize Paul is 82, but I submit that no one can name a picture with Paul where his performance did not leave an identifible mark of excellence. His is a life well-lived and I wish him the Very Best! He is for me--Class all the way!!

He's a beautiful man, not just handsome. I hate to hear he's retiring, but can understand it if he is. He deserves it. At least we have his films! ;)

Have a wonderful weekend Michael!

Seeing the name James Wong Howe, I was reminded of one my favourite movies: Seconds, where he also served as cinematographer under John Frankenheimer.

James Wong Howe was known as a master of black & white cinematography. He was the man that cracked a serious problem with B/W film; that blue eyes would not show on film! I wonder why he was chosen for Hud? Read the biography of James Wong Howe on IMDB to see how he did it.
