GRAND CANYON!

There is a lot to digest here in this Lawrence Kasdan film. But if you stay with it, there are many kernels of goodness. This is quite a departure for Friday Movie Suggestion Night. I will tell you ahead of time that this film does not unwind from the spool in a conventional manner. It requires concentration, but then Kasdan's directing is always interesting. In this film, he appears to be "multi-tasking" with the film's focus through each of the character's lives. Many people at the time this movie was released made a big deal of the fact that Kasdan brought us "The Bill Chill" as a characterization of the 80's and may have over-stepped in assuming the same effect for the 90's. I tend to be more cautious with such statements. You be the judge. This is an entirely different film. We are drawn into the struggles of urban life as it revolves around six residents of Los Angeles, California who come from varying backgrounds and find more meaning and definition to their lives through a series of dramatic events--each one allowing us to follow the paths of the characters. (The first event between two men of different races is gripping). Each member of this group finds their lives changed by the larger events of the world, and as a result they discover more commonality with one another than divisiveness. I--for one--was surprised to see Steve Martin in this type of role. Whatever you conclude, ultimately this is a powerful and well-acted movie with a tremendous Cast: Danny Glover as Simon; Kevin Kline as Mack, Steve Martin as Davis, Mary McDonnell as Claire, Mary Louise-Parker as Dee, Alfre Woodard as Jane, Jeremy Sisto as Roberto. The film is Directed by Lawrence Kasdan and Executve Produced by Keith Shartle. This film was Nominated at the Oscars for Best Original Screenplay in 1991(Lawrence and Meg Kasdan). It is quite an experience. See what you think and ENJOY!

Haven't seen this one but I like what I read about it here. Any resemblance to Paul Haggis's "Crash", Michael? It sounds as if there are some similarities in the storyline.
I liked The Big Chill! I made on my own here! lol
I agree mm. If it's anything resembling "Crash" I'm sure I'll enjoy it!
Thanks for the recommendation!!!
I liked the Big Chill too so I am sure i'd like Grand Canyon also.
mm: There will be certain shared themes but this movie stands alone and leaves you with a different feeling. (I don't want to give it all away here). ;)
Denny: I loved that film too! Glad you made it over. I'll drop by to see you too.
Christi: I look forward to hearing what you think!
Patti_cake: This one is interesting!
This is much better than "Crash", which I found had too many convenient "coincidences".
A bit like a Robert Altman film or Magnolia by Paul Thomas Anderson.
Sorry Michael, this is one of my least favorite of Kasdan's films. It wanders too much, (at least in my book.)
Great cast though.
I really liked this one. Thanks for reminding me to see it again. It is the kind of movie that actually makes you think about the world around us.
As for The Big Chill, I remember seeing it when I was at Michigan State back when it first came out and enjoying it--but at that age I really didn't get it. Now when I see it, I can actually feel the big chill!
Thomas! Man, I have missed your blogging! Good to see you around again. Your James Bond Blog last year is one of the funniest I have ever come across!!! Cheers!
Lisa B: Yeah, I agree totally that he did use this technique very deliberately. I do like where the movie ends up, though! ;)!!
MSU gal: What a match! Michigan State and seeing Kevin Kline in his MSU Sweatshirt in "The Big Chill". That was long ago, but seeing it this year, I found the part of Cloe touching! Thanks for stopping by! I'll visit you soon!!
I haven't watched this movie in years, but I remember it fondly. Excellent cast and I rather prefer a movie that unfolds in an atypical manner.
lisa: Yes, this is Lawrence Kasdan experimenting,I feel. He worked previously with Steven Spielberg, and I do like his work overall. But this flick leaves you in an interesting place in the end! :)
