ALMOST FAMOUS!

____________
"Friday Movie Suggestion Night" soldiers on! Hey, if you love Rock and Roll and either haven't seen this film in a while, or you managed to miss it altogether, this is a treat! Written by the Academy Award Winning writer and film director Cameron Crowe, (who actually was Editor of Rolling Stone Magazine before he went into the film industry) this autobiographical film centers on 15-year-old William Miller, an aspiring rock-and-roll journalist who writes stories for underground newspapers in San Diego, and an up and coming band he winds up joining on their tour bus. Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) is a tenderhearted and humorous groupie who befriends William and in the weeks ahead the two become swept up in every aspect of the music business. A phone call from Ben-Fong-Torres, Editor of Rolling Stone Magazine causes a change of fate when Torres mistakenly believes William to be older, after reading his band reviews in a rival magazine. The teen is assigned to tour with the band, "Stillwater" for exclusive interviews and possibly a front cover issue. The adrenalin fueled highs coupled with the ugly realities of betrayal experienced by Penny Lane and William leads to some unexpected life lessons. The story takes an unexpected twist that will ultimately touch your heart.
_____
The Cast: Billy Crudup as Russell Hammond; Frances McDormand as Elaine Miller; Kate Hudson as Penny Lane; Jason Lee as Jeff Bebe; Patrick Fugit as William Miller; Zooey Deschanel as Anita Miller, Phillip Seymour Hoffman as Lester Bangs. By just the opening of the film, I was grinning knowing this would be fun. Academy Award Nominations for 2001: Nominee for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen: Cameron Crowe; Nominated Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Kate Hudson; Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Frances McDormand; and Best Editing: Joe Hutshing and Saar Klein.

I'm with Christi. That is just one great movie. For me, this is Crowe's best movie--at least so far. I find it amazing that Crowe has done so well in so many areas and he's no older than I am. Damn.

Christi: I thought this would definitely be a fun suggestion. The opening is so cool.I felt like William!

Utenzi: He has done a lot, from "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" to "Jerry MaGuire". And he still writes occasionally for RS.

Patti Cake: I gues you'll have to just make a "Michael's List" and feel good that these movies are available anytime on CD. :)

You know, since this is a Cameron Crowe film and all the musical references, I really thought I was going to like it more than I did. It was ok, but I guess the anticipation ruined the delivery for me.

Janet: Not to worry! I have other cool movies in this years cache! :)

ole blue the heretic: I agree. And if there IS a "Penny Lane", Kate Hudson sure nailed that role. She's a cutie!!

THis is one of my favorite "quiet" movies, and I have it on DVD. My Ex literally fell in love with Kate Hudson in that role because she was so perfect for it. After seeing this film, it made Vanilla Sky feel all the more horrible to me.

Becky: Vanilla Sky DID feel so wrong--even before Cruise's ego got the best of him. But Kate was a bright light in this coming-of-age film. I loved the ending too! Nicely done.
